Frost is pretty funny and quirky, which makes talking about language much more engaging. You spend most of class time with a small group talking about your translations, which are pretty easy. This class goes by incredibly quickly, doesn't seem like 50 minutes at all.
Workload: a couple easy book chapters per week, a short (1-3 page) translation per week, a final portfolio-style translation
Professor Frost is awesome! She's super quirky and fun and made this class really enjoyable. Before taking it, I never knew how complex translation is, but Professor Frost does a great job of explaining the best ways to translate challenging pieces of all types (short stories, articles and poems). You have weekly translations due at the first class of the week and are workshopped during the other classes of the week. At the end of the week, she will tell you if she is going to collect that week's translation as 1 of the 4 translations she collects throughout the semester for a grade, which make up 30% of your course grade. There are also reflections you do throughout the semester (5% of course grade), a partner-presentation (10% of course grade), a participation grade (10% of course grade), a final exam (15% of final grade; made up of translating small parts of a short story, and article and a poem and a test of false cognates that you learn throughout the semester from the textbook), and a final translation of about 2500 words (30% of course grade). Not a super challenging class, but you definitely have to stay on top of your work weekly and do a solid job with each assignment. Overall, I totally recommend taking 4040 with Frost.
