Only take this class if it is an absolute requirement for you to graduate; it's usually not. Emily is very knowledgeable but extremely boring, the class is too hard for no reason, she makes the already boring material more boring, we go through a lot of material very quickly and learn nothing in the end. Avoid this class at all costs!
SPAN 3200 is not a super interesting class, but some aspects of the course can be! Once you get to about Unit 4, everything starts to come together a bit more and the class seems more cohesive. Profesora Scida seems to get a bad rep on here, but she is really not that bad. She does not grade the daily homework assignments or mini-proyectos very harshly, but can be a bit picky when grading short answer questions on tests. She can be somewhat boring since the set up of each class is her lecturing off a PowerPoint with a few collaborative practices built in to each lesson, but linguistics is a pretty dry subject to begin with, so I'm not sure exactly how she could change that set up. The great part about this class is that there are no papers or midterms/final. The only assessments are 6 pruebas throughout the semester, which can be a bit challenging because they are cumulative, but if you study thoroughly for each one, you will do well. I guess the biggest downside to the course is that attendance is extremely mandatory (you're only allowed two absences before your grade starts to become affected by attendance) and she truly does keep track of whether or not you are there on a daily basis. If you need to take 3200, I don't think it would be the end of the world to take it with Scida. It won't be the most fun course you'll take at UVA, but it definitely won't be the worst/most hard one either.
