I have never met such a responsible, engaging, and intelligent instructor. Because she was/is a student herself, she understands what students need and dislike and most importantly, takes steps to make sure that her curriculum is well designed to educate but not to burden.
The work load (and we are talking about readings, writings, and oral presentations) is not light at all. However, as I mentioned above, Alicia schedules due dates well, gives well-defined guidelines and help, and leads her students to engage with the class material in various ways. Work was consistent over the semester but I never found any particular one burdensome or overwhelming. Never.
I highly recommend this class to EVERYONE (not just students considering a path in Spanish). This class is practical and beneficial to analytic, speech, and presentation skills. The instructor is key in making this class worthwhile and she will only improve her curriculum for the better in the future. So take HER class for sure!
Like talking amongst peers in small discussion groups about topics that are overarching but nevertheless specific enough to practice Spanish? No other class can do better than Alicia's SPAN 3040.
Mandatory course anyway for Business Spanish minors.
Definitely recommend this class to anyone looking to continue studying Spanish. The material is interesting--I struggled a bit at first because I wasn't familiar with the concepts that much in English, but taking COMM 1800 concurrently cleared that up for me. Lots of vocab, but that's easy memorization. Alicia is fantastic and super understanding. There are maybe 6 vocab quizzes and three tests. The tests are long and partially take-home but after the first one, it becomes pretty easy to guess what will be asked about and to study for it. Alicia does a good job spreading out the final project over the year so you don't get bogged down at the end. I felt like I learned a lot in the class and had a good time; I prefer this stuff to literature analysis any day. Not too hard, just keep up with the material.
