Celeste is a fantastic Spanish professor. She's tough at times, but always makes the material fun and engaging. She's professional and friendly, and is always willing to talk to you and resolve any issue. Her tests are straightforward and an accurate assessment of whether or not you've been doing the homework/readings and participating in class. Don't take peer editing essays in class lightly; find a good partner. Celeste does not play around with essay writing and you need to be at the top of your game before you submit it for corrections.
This was definitely a worthwhile Spanish class. Celeste is a very fun, understanding instructor and tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible. There were several class periods where we would just sing songs in Spanish or play various games (often created by students as an extra credit option) that helped us learn the material and pertained to what we were studying at the time. The homework was never too overwhelming; although the grammar homework tended to be dry and meticulous. There were two exams, a presentation grade, and three essays (two 2-page essays, one 5-page essay) ; she would review our theses and outlines prior to us writing our drafts so as to provide helpful feedback/input. Make sure to learn how to use spell check in Spanish and avoid as many grammatical errors as possible in your essays. Overall, this course was definitely a highlight of my semester and opened my eyes to a potential Spanish major - would recommend!!
This has been hands down my favorite class at UVA. Celeste is simply a fantastic prof and makes going to class every day a blast. She genuinely cares about all of her students and will help you do what you need to succeed in the class. The course can be a lot of work, especially when you get to the end of the semester and read a full novel. However, it's totally worth it and you learn so much. Not sure that Celeste is teaching this class next semester, but especially if you are a Spanish major, you MUST take a class with her before you graduate.
