This has by far been my favorite class. Every class is super interesting and just fun in general, and I learned a lot and have been able to apply what I've learned in other classes and any time I've had to practice Spanish. I even found myself explaining concepts and topics we talked about in class to people who weren't in the class (and probably didn't care at all) because I was just excited about the class overall. There are 3 exams that are all take home and a "final" which is also take home that is just submitting a recording of you saying 10 phrases. The class was super easy, but very fun with a great professor, and I would absolutely recommend it.
Such a fun and actually useful class. I got to Spain and received lots of compliments on my Spanish pronunciation and would like to think a lot of it had to do with Prof Rini. He is a super sweet man who honestly just wants you to learn more than anything. 10/10 would recommend this class to anyone at all.
Easiest A you can take, as long as you make an effort to not sound like a gringo. Rini is absolutely adorable. Two exams, and they're easy as long as you pay attention in class - he literally gives you the answer. No final exam during finals week, just a recording of yourself pronouncing ten sentences.
There's a reason this used to be a major requirement. It's an awesome class.
Rini is GREAT. He's so nice and we spend a large amount of time in class laughing. The class is extremely easy, but you will also learn a lot, and your Spanish pronunciation will improve a lot. Typically, we cover a new sound/set of sounds every day or two, we practice the sounds as a class, individually, and do phonetic transcriptions on the board. The class is super low pressure. There is a textbook, but it's optional. Rini photocopies all the exercises and hands them out.
This is one of my favorite classes I have taken at UVA. Extremely helpful to learn how to speak Spanish correctly with most work done inside the classroom. Tests are fairly simple if you go to class and pay attention. Pretty strict attendance policy but still unsure if he actually follows it. He's my favorite professor I've had here and makes class so much fun. Highly recommend.
Rini is an awesome professor! The class has three tests spaced throughout the semester, but with the notes and examples he provides you with in class, you barely have to study. He gives a lot of class time to practice pronunciations and the transcriptions. If you're extremely nervous talking in front of a small group of people, this may be an uncomfortable class for you. Rini will call on each student of the class in whatever order you're sitting in to have you practice the different sounds and transcriptions aloud. In a class of 18 or so students, I became very comfortable with this. It later became hilarious as some students struggled with certain sounds, for example, the rolling of r's (though I struggled a little with this, also). Overall, great class. Rini keeps it nice and simple with little to no extra work.
Pretty easy class, but I disagree with the person below me. You practice pronunciation a lot in class, but pronunciation doesn't really comprise any of your final grade. The grade is almost entirely based on phonetic transcription (writing phonetically). If you're a gringo who can't speak Spanish, this is the class for you. If you do speak Spanish well and expect to skate through, you'd be wrong.
