I am taking this class as a first year for the fall 2024 semester. She is an incredible professor. I have not learned this much even though I have been taking Spanish classes since like first grade. It is a lot of busy work and the 8 am due dates are kinda annoying but if you miss an assignment you can use a token (you have 3 for the sem). The quizzes are super straightforward and easy if you study the vocab and conjugations (6 of them total). The exams were also easier than I thought (I got high A on both of them and did not study for oral). The only annoying thing about this class is the website we use to submit things (Eportfolio/Digication Kora) because the website is so difficult to navigate and work. I have not had to work that hard to keep my A but I also have taken Spanish for a very long time so the first quarter was a review of literally everything I have learned thus far. All in all, she is always happy and you can see how much she cares about her students I actually love her so much she is the best.
Monteros-Freeman is incredibly nice and engaging. Fall 2018 was her first year teaching college students, so sometimes the lessons were a bit all over the place and at times confusing, but the class itself is not hard at all. She deeply cares about students and their success, and routinely plays music in class, engages with students through games, and brings treats in. She makes the best out of a dull curriculum and I always felt well-prepared for the exams and activities. I placed into 2010 but probably should have placed higher, so I highly recommend her if you have Spanish experience and are just taking this class to fulfill the language requirement, and if you liked the way your high school Spanish class operated.
Connect is annoying and time-consuming, but it is not difficult. The exams are not hard as long as you know vocab and grammar. I didn't like the curriculum, but that is set by the Spanish department, not Monteros-Freeman. All in all, this is a fun class with an engaging professor who cares about your success but is relatively new to the way UVA Spanish courses are set up.
