UIP is absolutely NOT WORTH IT. You work at least 10 hours a week, have a 2 hour seminar, and lots of busy work (weekly responses, 10 page research paper, 45 minute presention, and 4 essays) all for 4 credit hours. You would be much better off getting a job/internship on your own as they options they offer aren't great. Additionally, Farber and others in the office are very difficult to work with. While well intentioned, they do not like when things do not go their way.
Sociology is a waste of time. the papers are needlessly long and dull, the textbook is irrelevant and mind numbing, if you're lucky you have an easy TA who doesn't care what you write, if you're not lucky you have someone who actually makes you do the readings and write coherent thoughts about them, which is difficult considering they are pointless. UIP is good for work experience, I've done it 2ce and loved both of my internships, but the seminar portion is the biggest waste of your time ever, so just be prepared to hate 2 hours of your life a week.
I will start off by saying that my TA, Yuliya, was phenomenal. She was funny and made this miserable experience as enjoyable as possible. That said, do NOT do the UIP program unless your resume truly needs a semi-legit internship. The work is mundane, most people do not get internships that are worth while, and Karen Farber is god awful.
This class should be avoided at all costs. The internships are not valuable and do not teach anything, or even offer a large resume boost. Karen Farber is condescending and rude, and only cares about the program, not the students' well-being or the value of the internship sites. The class portion is useless and a waste of time
