Great class. Vickerman is super smart and takes a lot of questions. He takes time to learn his students and the only assignments are a 10 pg paper, midterm, and final. He is a super easy grader. Material is quite interesting, readings are good (but unnecessary if focused on just grade)... highly recommend if interested in politics, sociology, or race.
Such an amazing class! My advice would be to be sure you participate and ask questions in lecture because that does a make a difference for your attendance/participation grade. Especially if you don't have discussion during your semester with him! I'm in my second class with Vickerman and he's great easy to follow with taking notes and very helpful. Always interesting material. Reading responses are due before every class but it actually helps you keep up with the readings. There's a ten paged paper but you can write it on any topic you want.
Absolutely loved this class! Professor Vickerman is an amazing lecturer, which made the mandatory attendance policy quite bearable. Although you must be prepared to read a significant amount, the subject matter is interesting and important (also Vickerman is usually pretty lenient with deadlines, which makes the course material much more manageable). Overall, a must-take class at the University - highly recommend!
This was the BEST class. Professor Vickerman is extremely knowledgeable and a fantastic lecturer. I found the readings to be consistently interesting, and although you didn't have to directly respond to them each week, they helped a lot with the two papers (one 5 page and one 10 page) and in studying for the final. The final was not too difficult and the grading on the papers (Gabriella Smith as TA) was definitely fair. The class is also definitely one of the most diverse at UVA. Professor Vickerman was very welcoming at office hours. TAKE THIS CLASS! You will learn so much about the world we live in.
Vickerman is the sweetest. The class was the most diverse as far as students that I've had at UVA. The work is mostly readings each week which are cool and relevant but you can get away without doing them mostly. There is one big (12pg) paper and a final. THe paper can be anything you want and its graded easily. This was one of my favorite classes I've taken. Not too difficult and you get some good conversations going if you have a decent TA. And you watch a lot of movies too
Great fun interesting class. One paper, have an idea of what you want to write about it and talk to him as soon as possible, keep meeting with him and get feedback. Go to office hours he's interesting to talk to! Final isn't bad, you either know it or you don't, no trick questions. Favorite class at UVA so far!
Vickerman is a pretty funny character--this class is not inherently difficult if you write a decent paper and review class notes for the final, that being said it was still a very valuable course. The material is highly applicable to everyones' life and will make you see the world through new eyes. Definitely recommend. Also, Julia Schroeder is foxy.
This is a fantastic class! Vickerman is awesome and very relaxed. He gives out extensions on papers without a problem and is very approachable. One of the best course I've taken at UVA. Julia is a little intense as a T.A. but she does help to get you thinking about the material discussed in lectures.
Vickerman is a hilarious guy and his lectures are full of jokes. He always laughs at his own jokes, which makes it even more comical and really lightens the mood. The reading is easy and somewhat interesting, but honestly not necessary at all - I started skimming about halfway through the semester and had no problem understanding the material because his lectures are so informative. The grade is based on discussion section, two papers, and a VERY easy final (as long as you've paid attention in class). On our final, there were about 22 questions (5-6 multiple choice) and we just had to choose and answer about 15 of them. The other questions were short response, no long essays.
I'd recommend this class to anyone - very easy for a 3000 level and it really makes you think about society differently.
Great class, more students should take it at UVa. He changed the course to be no midterm, one 10-12 page paper on your choice, and a final. Great grade booster, and the topics are pretty interesting. There's only one TA, who could've facilitated discussions more, but good at covering the material necessary for the exam. Exam is pretty much on lecture, so take good notes.
The class is very good about explaining the role of race in America and will change how you think for sure. Vickerman is a very nice guy and is a source of a lot of information. There is a good amount of reading but you do need to do it to get an A in the class. There is one large paper, but I found that he graded easily. Take the class!
This is a great class! I loved it - it was what got me hooked to Sociology. Issues of Race and Ethnicity are fascinating and eye-opening, and for a 300-level class this class isn't hard at all. You will find Professor Vickerman to be relatively easy-going and humorous, and with lots of witty and informative things to say. The reading was a drag, though - I didn't do half of it (which is probably why I got a B+), but you can get by. Fantastic class.
