This course is fun and fresh overall! I like the idea of applying sociological concepts to popular culture artifacts. The assigned artifacts were relevant and relatable. I found that going to lecture was not critical to overall understanding--as much of the learning happened from reading the textbooks and completing the weekly writing prompts. I found it difficult to take notes from Professor Foster's lectures because his thoughts were often left incomplete. However, you can tell that he is extremely passionate and seems to be a kind and intelligent guy. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone looking for an easy A and new insight into popular culture.
I highly recommend this class! The topics we discussed (i.e. Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake, Miley Cyrus, Joe Rogan, Nike, Eras Tour, Barbenheimer and more) were relevant and entertaining while still being educational. This class meets twice a week for lecture and once a week for discussion. Lecture was slow and largely an overview of the reading. I wish Prof Foster (who you can tell is very knowledgable and intelligent) went into more detail about the nuances of the subject matter and challenged us a little more in class. The discussion is super fun if you have an engaged class and a good TA, and you can talk about virtually anything within the realms of the course/the week's objective. We had a few free absences from lecture (do note that this still impacts your "class preparedness" grade) and one from discussion. There was one Entry due each week that was typically between 300-500 words (drop lowest score) and a mandatory final entry that was 850-1100 words. I actually enjoyed the readings, and they weren't overly challenging or long (although you could skim and be fine). Overall a great GPA booster while being a fun, interesting, and meaningful class.
