To be honest, I didn't like this class and learned nothing.... There was soo many assignments, all difficult to keep track of and definitely was not an intro class. There were two quizzes, where the class average was about 65% (not normal for an INTRO class) which covered nothing that was in the textbooks. There were a lot of "what if" and hypothetical questions that were quit difficult to answer. Aide from the quizzes, the assignments were VERY time consuming and not much informative. In class activities were mundane and seemed pointless and DID NOT relate to what we were learning. Attendance is required for in class participation points. Not a big fan of this class
The worst class I took this year and I took a philosophy course. I was expecting the material to be fairly interesting and easy, yet the professor talked about literally everything but astrology. The first half of the course is very math-based but the second half is more interesting and actually about science. The thing I hated about this class was that Prof. went through the slides at a rate of about 3 seconds per slide and used them more as a prop. It was impossible to learn the material from the slides and the lecture. The book didn't even help because we would be tested on things that weren't covered in the book, like math, astrology, and story-building skills! The in-class activities were legitimately ridiculous. One of the first days of class, he had us write a story about a death in Hollywood. There were two tests in this class that I knew nothing for. Do not recommend. (I've also the other professors for this course aren't great either so I wouldn't look to this course for an easy A for a gen ed. Find anything else!)
I learned next to nothing in this course. Remy uses lecture to laugh at his own (not funny) jokes and only spends about 50% of class time actually discussing astronomy. It also felt like I was in a 3rd grade arts and crafts class from the projects we were required to do. Exams are insanely difficult. Highly do not recommend unless you have a high patience and good understanding of astronomy already.
I thought this would be an easy science, so I took it instead of Bio or Chem, but it was actually a lot harder than I would have imagined. It included a lot more math and physics than I realized, and the exams were SO hard. Remy is an awesome professor and always tried to keep class fun, but concepts in class would seem easy and then the tests were a smack in the face. Find something else to fill your general requirements!!!!!
Professor Indebetouw really worked hard to make the coursework interesting. He also offered ample opportunities for extra credit, making it almost difficult to do poorly in his class. I would recommend him to anyone taking astronomy 1210, especially to those non-science majors. I didn't spend a whole lot of time outside of class, and half of the assignments were just blog posts on collab!
