Fair class, but not to be recommended if you're looking for a fun Sociology class. If you're looking to fulfill your social science requirements, I'd say look elsewhere (esp. toward the 200-level topic seminars). Because this class is a broad survey of basic sociology, it's not particularly hard but not particularly interesting either. Lectures can be insightful at times, and Professor Kingston is a pretty good lecturer (keeps class interesting). Reading can be kind of a pain sometimes, though. I don't think I finished it, but I did relatively well, so I guess you can get by with missing a few here and there.
The second half of the course is especially interesting since you move past the basic theories of sociology and unto issues such as race, globalization, etc. It was then that I realized how fun sociology is. I wish I had paid more attention at the beginning- to be honest I hardly ever attended lectures (which I regret b/c I think I would've gotten more out of the course) and I did the readings right before exams. However, I ended up with a B+, as well as newfound appreciation for this great subject!
This class had interesting topics, but Kingston has a monotone voice and seems very bored about everything he's teaching. That makes it hard to pay attention and most of the time you really don't even need to. Study guides for test are definitely useful as test materials pretty much taken straight from there.
