Like you potential student pondering whether to take a class that knocks out two pre reqs like Dracula, I too was excited about this course. Nonetheless, Farooqi is a terrible professor who basically taught the class on a whim, was not available outside of class, and left the grading quite ambiguous. DO NOT TAKE!!! Perhaps, I was unfamiliar with her personality, but she is the type of professor to absolutely roast anything you say if she doesn't agree with you. She expects you to regurgitate what she says, and if you don't, she will treat you like a elementary student and move you to the front of the class. DO NOT TAKE
This class has some of the best material out there. I would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like something out of the Modern Urdu Literary Cannon. The variation of poems & short stories keep the reading fairly small (should you choose to do it), while still allowing for you to feel like you've gotten something out of the class. Mehr, herself, is a good professor overall. I found myself sometimes questioning what she was talking about, but seeing as this is more of a student driven seminar, she really is open to ideas, opinions, and facts that seem germane to the coversation. Overall, a brilliant class with great reading and a good professor. Take it.
