Rocco is super nice and enthusiastic about teaching. He's not great with technology (he had to get help from Greg a lot), but he was flexible. Class is not an easy A, but I found it very rewarding and enjoyable. Assignments were watching a 20-30 minute lecture before class, 5 language labs (watching someone sign in a video and writing it down), 4 short videos (you record yourself signing and you comment on it), and the occasional reading response from the textbook, book, movie, etc. (we hardly read the textbook and there was around 3 reading responses the entire semester).
I loved having Rocco this semester! He's not great with technology, which can be frustrating/funny in a Zoom class, but he's really nice and enthusiastic. He's very slow with feedback though, so I wouldn't rely on his feedback before the next assignment. The class consists of 6ish language labs, 4 SAVs, 1 paper, and a 20-30 minute lecture before each class. There are 2 textbooks that you have to write discussion posts on occasionally and answer quiz questions on, but the reading is split up over the semester so it isn't bad. I'd say the lectures were the worst part because it honestly felt like we had class 7 times a week, not 4. The quizzes were really tough, much more than the exams in my opinion. I imagine it's much easier in person though, and I'd recommend this class solely because of Rocco's energy and love of teaching.
I honestly love Rocco, he's such a vibrant character and super understanding. There was never a moment where I wasn't having fun during classes and I honestly only ever came to grounds because my day ended with ASL. The only thing I didn't love about Rocco was his timing, particularly with grades and emails. There are, to this day, several quizzes that I never got back, and we didn't get our midterm grade until the day right before the final. Granted, the week leading up to the final, he had a few things going on, but I still would have definitely appreciated if I got my midterm back a few days after the final, as opposed to almost two months. Despite all that, ASL 1010 was a super amazing class and Rocco is an amazing and funny character.
Rocco is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. I highly recommend taking him if you have the opportunity. He makes learning a language, so engaging and fun. There’s not much homework in this class. You get an assignment every week or so. I would definitely recommend taking advantage of tutoring. The quizzes throughout the semester are challenging but doable. You will always leave class with a smile on your face and you will have a good laugh in class. Also the drill portion is never as long as it says on SIS, you get out early. Rocco is the best!!
Rocco made class so fun every time! He's incredibly friendly, funny, and especially encouraging. Never be afraid to ask for help (honestly he'll like you better because of it). The tutoring sessions were incredibly helpful, and the program provides so many resources that as long as you put in the effort, an A is not too hard to achieve. The quizzes were stressful at first: you watch the teacher sign and scribble down as much as you understand, and then transfer what you wrote to the quiz paper. However, they are split into small sections so it's never too much at once. Again, the tutoring sessions are incredibly helpful for studying. Rocco is a harsher grader than Greg or Maher because he doesn't give partial credit (whereas the other two do), but Greg inputs your final grades (and I think he curves them a little to account for that). There are always reading questions on the quizzes too, and you definitely need to do the reading. Whenever you come across a giant list of examples, always memorize 2-3. The midterm and final were not too stressful either (much less so than the quizzes); you either conversed with a peer or your professor in ASL along given conversation guidelines.
