could not recommend this class more. it's definitely not easy and I spend a lot of time outside of class signing and practicing fingerspelling all semester. After taking both asl 1010 and 1020 I would say that your fingerspelling abilities can only take you so far, but are still the most important skill within the first year. The quizzes are very difficult because he only signs everything once, so I recommend reviewing signs outside of class and getting a study group if you want to do well. Also do the readings because missing reading questions is detrimental. He curves the quizzes per class so that could either be a pro or a con depending on how well you do against your classmates. attendance is mandatory but greg is very understanding if you have to miss for excusable reasons. This is definitely going to be a very time consuming course as would any brand new language, but it was also my favorite class first semester. Go to signed lunches if you can too because you get to meet all of the professors that are Deaf and hear all of their stories. Also attending events outside of class most definitely helps you both get better at ASL and do better in the class as a whole.
Honestly one of my favorite classes I have taken at UVA. Greg (and the rest of the ASL department) is absolutely amazing. This is a super fun class and you learn so much in just a semester. I recommend keeping a list of all signs he introduces with clipart/videos of the signs to review before quizzes/exams. Reading isn't too bad over the semester- there is usually 1 chapter every 2 weeks or so (comparatively light compared to other classes). I absolutely recommend going to the signing lunches and DEAFS tutoring sessions whenever possible- they are extremely helpful. The drill sections on Tuesdays are so much fun (highly recommend Tammy!!). The quizzes and midterms can be difficult but Greg is super understanding and wants all of his students to succeed. This class is not an "easy" A but if you put the time in and make an effort an A is absolutely possible.
ASL has remained my favorite class over the years, and I think Greg is the best teacher you can get at UVA. The class is challenging as expected, but it's fun and the material is so well laid out and handed to you. We have so many real world examples and the assignments are super fun. The material connects to pop culture, fun events at UVA, and Deaf culture in general. The books are interesting, and if you keep up with the videos he sends out, and show up to class it is kind of hard not to enjoy and learn! No matter the professor, definitely try and start a study group as it will help you so much! And GO TO DRILL!! It may be short but you will miss it when you get to 2000's level + and it's super fun! The Youtube videos may seem arbitrary, but they will help you so much to retain everything. Overall cannot recommend the class more, and you'll be grateful for the challenge that Greg offers when you continue with ASL!
The class is amazing! Grasping a new language is hard, but I definitely recommend this class to anybody if you have even the smallest interest in ASL. Greg is a very understanding professor and truly wants to see his students do well. Even with classes online he tried to make this experience as enriching as he could. The quizzes can be difficult, but if you prepare you will be fine. As for drill, Strickler is the best!! The class breakdown is: Class participation and homework 15%, Drill participation 10%, Quizzes 35%, Midterm interview 15%, Paper and online responses 5%, and Final exam 20%.
I took ASL 1010 during the fall semester of my first year, and I absolutely loved it! Greg was an engaging and understanding teacher. Although his quizzes are definitely tough, he truly wants to help those students invested in learning ASL grow as signers. If you plan to progress through ASL 2020 or pursue the ASL and Deaf Culture minor, I would 100% recommend taking ASL 1010 with Greg. His class will provide a solid cultural and linguistic knowledge base beneficial to those moving forward in the ASL program. In terms of TAs, I would recommend Robert Strickler. He is super friendly and helpful!
Greg is one of the best ASL teachers. He's understanding of hearing students and slows down to explain if you need to. I've only been to only one of his office hours, but he will definitely help you with homework. Half of the homework is watching videos and trying to understand what's being signed. The other half is you signing to be critiqued. The quizzes are pretty tough, but if you have someone to practice signing with, you should be okay.
This is one of the best classes I've taken at UVA. Cannot stress this enough, but if you have even just a modicum of interest in ASL or are looking for a language requirement - take this class! It's not easy, but if you work hard and genuinely approach the class with an open mindset ready to learn, you'll be fine. The ASL department is amazing.
I loved ASL 1010, especially with Greg. This class is not easy, so do not take it as your foreign language requirement if you are not serious about it. It definitely takes practice and there are a decent amount of assignments over the semester. I do enjoy class, although it was intimidating when he did not speak any English on the first day of class. The class teaches you a lot, and you do become pretty good at signing by the end of the semester (as far as being a beginner can go). I recommend Jenny for your drill... she is the sweetest person on the planet and will make the late class not as miserable.
This class is the best!!!! I have recommended this class to all of my friends because it is truly one of the most engaging and satisfying classes at this university. Greg is an awesome teacher who genuinely cares about the language and his students. The course load is not heavy at all, yet you still learn so much in such a short amount of time. There are a couple video recordings you must submit and some written assignments, but they do not take long at all. Greg does take a long time to grade assignments (except for the 3 quizzes you take) which can be inconvenient. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this class, especially if you are trying to receive a foreign language credit.
Going into this class, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had heard that language classes at UVA are extremely hard. After taking ASL 1010, I would agree with that. This is most definitely the hardest class that I took this semester and the one that I put the most work hours into. It was also my favorite class though. ASL is an amazing, fun, expressive language and Greg is a great teacher. At times it can be frustrating because the amount of effort you put in will not always be reflected by how well you perform, but Greg is always 100% available to help you out and is insanely understanding if you go to him struggling or even if you just forget to do an assignment as long as you show a passion for the subject. All in all this is a very worthwhile class and if you are even slightly interested in taking it, you should go for it. You definitely will not regret it.
Professor Propp is the bomb! He is such a nice guy he also is not deaf which is helpful for beginners when trying to ask questions. He is a native signer(most of his family is deaf) but when you go to his office hours he will tell you what he is signing. He tells funny stories through ASL and keeps the class interesting with group work. Not much work at all, it is not a written language so there is not much you can do. There is a workbook but it is not mandatory and quizzes are given by Gregg signing things at the front of the class while you write down what he says. It's a really good option for a language requirement.
Greg is one of the best professors at UVA, and just an all-around great guy. He makes the class fun, interesting, and relevant to everybody's lives, while teaching a HUGE amount of material in one semester. I loved this class, it is an awesome window into a culture that most people otherwise don't get a chance to observe.
Not too hard, as language classes go. Greg is a great teacher. People say he signs fast, but I haven't seen anybody sign slower than him, so I think it's just something you have to get used to. Everyone in my class has picked up the language pretty quickly thanks to Greg, and we feel comfortable signing to each other outside of class.
