I really enjoyed this class. It's the base class for a bioethics minor and very interesting as just that: an introduction the world of bioethics. Professor Childress is a very knowledgable professor... he literally wrote the book on bioethics. The tests were very fair and the two short papers that we had to write were pretty easy.
This class was awesome. Definitely my favorite class at UVA so far. Childress gives you lecture outlines, the 3 2-page papers you write for your discussion sections are on topics you choose and are interested in liek abortion and stem cell research, and most Fridays are movie days. This class is incredibly interesting and absolutely worthwhile.
This class had the potential to be really interesting, but it fell a little short. The reading in the textbook is basically a more painful reiteration of the lectures, and the lectures don't cover the assigned articles in the packet at all. Most of the grade in the class is based on understanding (or rote memorization) of the articles read. Reading, although certainly interesting, can be a bit heavy at times. Childress is a pretty good lecturer, though, so attending class isn't bad--though it may have little bearing on your grade. Discussion section proved to be the most valuable part of the class. Steve is a great TA: a nice guy who really knows his stuff.
This is an interesting class, especially if you complete all of the readings; however, some of the readings can be somewhat heavy at times. Childress is very easy to approach during office hours. Discussions with Josuf was ok; he had some decent questions but was not that great of a facilitater--it was like he could run the discussion without us being there. 20% of your grade is based on your discussion section (including 3 2-page papers), so attendance is necessary.
