Campbell himself seems like he couldnt care less about the class; comes in late, leaves early, cancels class a lot, shit like that. But with that said, there are no grades except a midterm and final and an essay, so you don't really need to go to class, although he's a decently interesting lecturer. The readings are dry, so I don't know many people who did them. But i think this is probably one of the better ways to get your non-western out of the way, so i would definitely take this class if you can
This class fulfills your nonwestern perspective and one of your humanities requirements, so if you need those filled or just need an easy A, take this class. Don't buy the books or go to lectures. Just go to discussion with Kali Cape and cram before each test and read a summary of the book needed for the paper. Honestly, it's the easiest class at UVA. The TAs literally give 100s on blue book exams. Take the class. Take it.
Professor Campbell was an awful lecturer, just terrible. He is quiet and you can't even tell whats important or not. He made us buy clickers and said class was mandatory for our grade, but got an email during last week of classes saying that it was just out participation in discussion section. He is so unorganized. TA Kali Nyima Cape was excellent; she tells you everything you need to know for the tests and is really funny. Class is pretty boring, as well as most of the subject matter, but it was easy. Grade is made up of a midterm, a paper, participation in sections, and a final. Cram night before and you're fine. Also, do not buy the books. I literally did not read one page of assigned readings in this class and got an A-.
Professor Campbell didn't post the final syllabus until 2 weeks before the final. DO NOT bother buying any of the books. He changes it so many times that you'll have books you don't need and won't have some you do. He posts half the readings in Collab, and the others can be found online if you google. Campbell speaks really quietly and goes off on tangents where you can't tell what's relevant and what isn't. I hardly paid attention in class, where attendance is mandatory. My TA was awesome though. Kali Nyima Cape taught me everything I needed to know for all the exams and made complicated concepts much more clear.
This class is exceptionally easy and revolves around a very interesting subject. However, Professor Campbell was overall just awful. He was really disorganized, scatter brained during lectures, and often ended up teaching the same material over and over again. I did really enjoy discussion with the TA, Kali Cape though. She was fantastic and overall made the class worth it.
Professor Campbell was horrible. His lectures were disorganized and boring, but attendance is mandatory and you have to do iClickers. That being said, the class was pretty easy, and I found the material interesting. My TA Nyima Kali Cape was awesome; I learned more from her in discussion than lecture. Grade comes from a midterm, final, participation in section, and a pretty easy 4 page essay. He assigns a lot of reading, but you don't really have to do most of it.
