okay so this was supposed to be an easy A class but it turned out to be a hard A- class. Nemec is a friendly professor and is super accessible but sadly he isnt the ones grading your exam. Its the TA. So pray you get an good TA. There were 3 exams and each had a short essay, long essay, and 5-8 ids. Again they arent hard as long as you pay attention in class which is hard since Nemec goes on soooo many tangents and doesnt really get to the point. So discussions are the place to ask all your questions. Overall okay class its a good class to take to satisfy your area requirement.
Best class I have taken at UVA hands down! Nemec is hilarious and truly cares about his students. I had never taken a religious studies course before this, and I have now decided to minor. He is incredibly understanding and goes out of his way to help you understand. Very interesting, manageable, and eye opening! Highly recommend!
Professor Nemec is an amazing professor. He's funny, smart, and engaging during lectures. I took this class because I hadn't learned anything about eastern religions since 5th grade. Go to lectures (they're funny!) and take notes; you'll do fine. Grade is 30% for each of the 3 midterms and 10% for discussion. I had a lot of fun with this class and I actually learned a lot. Considering Religious Studies as a second major now!
This was the course that made me decide to double major with Religious Studies. I was originally only taking it for non-western perspective, but ended up loving the material. Nemec is one of the best professors I have had at UVA. He often goes off on funny stories, but then ties them in with the subject material, so even if you aren't interested in these religions he makes the class entertaining. Definitely recommend.
Pretty easy class. Interesting enough but no need to go to many of the lectures or do much of the reading. Nemec is a nice and well-intentioned guy but often takes 45 minutes to convey only one or two relevant ideas. Overall, not a bad introductory course in eastern religions, but there are better religion courses out there if you're interested in this subject area.
Professor Nemec is a character. He always brings up some interesting/random story. There is a lot of reading, some of which is pretty dry. If you want to learn about other cultures, though, the content is interesting. I would recommend any course with Nemec, it will surely be entertaining and you'll learn a good amount!
