Honestly, this class was not what I thought it would be. Lectures were dull for the most part, even though I really did like Professor Lang. While I wish lecture had more engaging, but I did learn a ton about Buddhism. This course gives a very broad overview with lots of history and lineage and not that much about present day Buddhism. It wasn't too difficult, but it also wasn't that interesting.
Pretty boring lectures. On the bright side Lang only talks for about 40 minutes, followed by an array of sometimes off-topic videos (for instance, anime). Reading was over-the-top and not really necessary since she sent out key questions in email. Just know the answers to those. Midterm was memorization, paper and final are a breeze. Getting an A requires 1) memorizing terms for the first exam 2) participating in discussion 3) writing a competent paper and 4) knowing the broad themes for the final. Very doable course, interesting but not necessarily exciting.
Took this class because I heard it was an easy A, and it is, but it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I zoned out/skipped class a lot, which is why I didn't do as well as I could've in class. Lectures were boring, but usually pretty short. She has powerpoints for each lecture, so taking extremely meticulous notes isn't necessary. The videos following her powerpoints were super boring. The reading was sometimes interesting, but I didn't do many of them. Definitely study for the first midterm, because it's technically the "hardest" grading component. Final was open note, paper topics were not too hard, there was even an extra credit paper that would reduce your midterm and paper grade percentages. I found discussion so pointless, but that may be because of my TA Rinchen, who I do not recommend at all. Professor Lang was an okay professor. Her voice was too soothing to the point of lulling someone to sleep. Overall, I did not particularly enjoy this class, but I am partly to blame. Would recommend for someone who's looking for a somewhat easy humanities credit.
