This class was not terrible...but it was not a good class either. The readings were pointless, the only time you needed to read for the class was in preparation for the two papers we wrote and those consisted of 1-2 relevant papers max. Lectures are also pointless, he has slides with too much irrelevant information on them and you aren't allowed to use the them for any assignments. The only reason I came to class this year was because he threatened to call roll but never did. Professor Gentry himself is very nice and very approachable, he's a super easy grader and seems to be passionate about Buddhism. Overall, the class was neither difficult nor interesting.
I'll give to you strait. The class is okay and relatively easy. Easy as in an A is doable. The first 25% of your grade is an in class exam. He gives you a study guide and if you spend about 4 days studying or about 8 hours, you'll get an A or B. I knew nothing a few days before the exam and got a B. The next exam is a paper. The average was a 91. Takes about 5 hours to write ( 4-5 pages double spaced). The Final is also a paper 5-6 pages similar to the 1st paper. The discussion takes attendance and is 10%. YOU DON'T NEED TO DO THE READINGS. I would recommend that you don't do them as a general rule. He posts the class PowerPoints online and you could probably get away with skipping class. The only time you need open the books is for the papers. I will probably get an A or A- and I put little time in the class. There is the opportunity to increase your average by 4% because of Extra credit on the final paper. So you could get a 104.
