Awesome course, would definitely recommend for anyone to take. Prof Schaeffer is very chill and explains all the content in really digestible ways, and if you pay attention the readings go over some very interesting stuff. The exams are straightforward and never confusing, he usually gives you excerpts that guide and help you answer the questions, but you should definitely be familiar with the material beforehand to make it easier. If you have any questions the prof is happy to talk about anything and is actually helpful. Didn't add any stress to my semester and I took some interesting concepts away that I never would have been exposed to.
I took this class to take care of a gen-ed, and found I enjoyed a lot of the stuff we learned! Schaeffer is a fun lecturer, and as you might hear, the class isn't very difficult at all. The lectures were worth attending for the brief weekly writing assignments as well as to learn some basic things about Buddhism, but this didn't add any stress to my workload and was a great class. #tCFF23
This was a very strange class, the professor is very chill and you don't have to go to class. You learn some stuff about buddhism but all of it is irrelevant for the actual assignments that are in the class - two vocab exams, some in class assignments, and a final project. This class is super boring but if you need a class where you don't really need to go, I recommend it.
Like everyone else said, pretty boring class and I can't remember anything I learned. The grade breakdown is: 30% in-class exercises, 30% two vocab quizzes throughout the semester, 40% final project. There were about five in-class exercises for the semester, which were easy (one of them was listening to music and writing about how you felt). The vocab quizzes were just pure memorization, you have to memorize about 50 words and then you're quizzed on 20 of them. Lecture was pretty boring and half the people don't show up, although Schaeffer seems passionate about the subject. There were weekly readings which I never did because we didn't have to talk about them in discussion. The only assignments I did for this class outside of the in-class ones were memorizing vocab words and the final project. Overall, if you're looking for a class to slack off in and you don't care how boring it is, take this class. #tCFfall22
I really enjoyed this class! Professor Schaeffer was an enjoyable lecturer: funny and passionate about the subject. Also if Nick was an amazing TA! He was the best TA I've had here at UVA. Super nice and cool, has an awesome history in Tibetan Buddhism. He tells you about his experiences of being in Tibet and working as a bodyguard for a Tibetan lama. Awesome teachers and not too hard. I highly recommend this class
I took this class in the summer and it was a cake-walk. We spent half of the classes watching a movie and going home. The other half of the classes were discussion about the movie we just watched.
Journal 25%, Participation 25%, and Final 1500-word essay 50%. The grades are essentially a completion grade. Shaeffer is very nice, enthusiastic, and makes sure to keep the class fun.
