This was her first semester teaching Research Methods in Cognitive Science but it was still an easy, enjoyable class. Mariana is very sweet and she's lenient with deadlines. A lot of the content was stuff I'd covered in other classes, so this was mostly a refresher, but there was also new content building off of that. There are two exams, each worth 25% of your final grade. The first test was multiple choice and was tricky, but the second test was short answer / essay format and was much easier. The other 50% of your final grade is based off of four experiments that you build on your computer. She provides video instructions on how to complete these experiments and you have class time to work on them and get help if something goes wrong. She also gave an optional extra credit assignment. There isn't much reading, typically 1 article per week that covers the same stuff you learned in class but goes more in depth. I skipped a lot of the readings and that hurt my grade on the first exam. Once you start working on the experiments at the end of the semester, you don't have any reading assignments. The only thing I didn't like about the class was that it's 2.5 hours long, but she gave us breaks halfway through class and the material is easy so I wasn't too mentally worn out. Great class to fill your psych or cog sci requirements or if you're just interested in building cognitive experiments!
This is the best class I’ve taken in the psychology department. Golino is a new professor and she has a very thick Brazilian accent but she is a sweetheart. She tries to help you in every which way so that you understand the material and is very lenient while grading. She also had many extra credit assignments which I had forgotten were factored into the grade. Before the extra credit was factored in I had a high A- but after I had close to a 100 for the course, which is absurd (in a good way). The one drawback, which isn’t her fault, is that her office is located near Barracks for some reason, so going to office hours is not possible, unless you want to zoom. Hopefully they move her over the Gilmer though because even though this was her first semester teaching I can already tell she is going to be very popular in the psychology department.
