Love Dr. Grossmann. Super nice and flexible but he is kind of montone in lecture, it can get boring.
He posts slides for the whole semester at once in the beginning and exams are straight off of those.
3 midterms 33% each, no final
No textbook, only homework is reading 4 research articles before each midterm because the last class before all 3 midterms is a review of those studies (He does ask detailed questions based on those).
As someone who'd never taken a psychology course before, I have to say that I really enjoyed Professor Grossman's course a lot. He's very enthusiastic about the material, which generally made the lectures engaging although he has a tendency to fly through the material. Sometimes it felt like he was taking us a little too far into the weeds with detailed breakdowns of various experiments, but for the most part, I found the course easy to follow. I learned a lot of important takeaways that will hopefully make me a better parent one day. I usually did the assigned readings in the week leading up to each of the three exams plus a few hours of studying, and I ended up doing very well in the course. I didn't do any other work outside of that. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking for an easy, yet interesting course.
Professor Grossmann is definitely an expert in the field that's also passionate about teaching infant development. I wish this class wasn't online so I could have gone to lectures in person but I genuinely enjoyed this class. There are readings you have to do instead of a textbook, but they aren't too long nor hard to understand. 7-9 pages roughly took an hour and then the longest one might have taken maybe 2-2.5 hours. Some people brush through them and get the idea, but I recommend annotating because he will have exam questions about the readings. He does go over the readings the lecture before the exam which is really nice in the event a particular study was harder to understand. I overall really enjoyed this class, one of the best I've taken so far. Definitely study ahead of time because while the exams aren't meant to trick you, there is A LOT of information. Fair grading system and fair tests. Like many biology classes, your grade is based on 3 exams. Therefore, it's important to study ahead and do well on them as there's no buffer. He does add 2 bonus questions in the event you're unsure about some questions, which is really nice.
I absolutely loved this course! I enjoyed learning the development of infants! I would recommend this course to everyone. It is an easy course, and I ended up with an A-. For those who plan on taking this course in the future, I would recommend you to study at least a week before the exam and review his lecture slides. His exam questions are based only on his lecture slides! No textbook is needed for this course.
Toby is the absolute best for so many reasons. First, it’s an hour and fifteen lecture but he usually lets you out after about 45 minutes. Second, he assigns only 4 articles to read for each exam, but you can generally just skim them and be able to answer the exam questions. He also posts every lecture of the semester online on the first day, which made it super easy to study ahead and also made going to lecture not a necessity. I think I missed over half the lectures in person. When everything was transitioned online he made it super easy to view and understand the lectures. The content is also super easy to understand and interesting. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I’d care about babies, but Toby really convinced me that infant development is cool. And now the best part, the exams. There’s only 3 exams, with no final, 40 multiple choice plus 2 bonus questions. The two bonus questions are such a favor because it allows you to not stress about missing a couple on the exam. But that’s not usually an issue because the exams are very straightforward. I don’t think I’ve ever had a higher grade in a class, and at the same time I don’t think I’ve ever worked so little in a class. It was perfect for me because I was credit overloading this semester and this class really helped to tame my workload. And one last thing, Grossmann is literally the nicest human being. He’s terrible with emails but he’s very approachable at office hours. Cannot recommend this class enough. It ticks off everything you want in a class. Interesting content, amazing professor, light workload, easy exams.
This class was great. Way better than child psych imo. No mandatory textbook and the grade is just 3 non cumulative midterms. For each one, you just have to skim 4 articles about studies he gives you, but just read the abstract and figures and it's easy. The exams are very chill and all based on lectures. I would recommend attending lectures, but you don't really have to. You could still get an A with just going to a few. He asks 2 bonus questions on each exam to compensate for any other missed questions which is awesome (they're usually on the research articles). Usually class ends early. And I'm not talking about 2-3 minutes early. I'm talking like 15-20 minutes early. Plus, there are guest lectures, which is nice. On top of that, you will also learn quite a bit about infants that you didn't know, mainly that they are much more capable of certain things than we think. 10/10 would recommend
If you take this class, definitely take it with Grossman!! He is extremely knowledgeable and makes the class super easy. The class is extremely interesting, but he essentially just reads off the slides. He has three 40 question exams (100 pts each and NO FINAL :)))!! ) and grades are based on points (A+ = 300 pts). Exams are very straight forward and come directly out the power point . There is no book for the class , but he does assign articles to read and questions about those are always on the exam and are also used as bonus questions. You don't have to know every detail for the articles ( I only ever skimmed), but do know the general idea (he has clarification sessions for the articles that usually tell you what you need to know) .I usually studied the 1-2 days before the exam and got high A's ( I'd say study you need 4 days at most to study all the content for the exams, bc it is usually 5-6 classes worth material until the third exam which is about 10-11 classes before exam). It also isn't very necessary to go to class ( I missed several), but I did make sure to go to the review sessions before exams to clarify things I didn't get.
