Meyer is a great professor; he’s enthusiastic, approachable, and cares about his students. Though he doesn’t always explain concepts the best way, he works hard to support students. He always watched the zoom chat and always responded to what students wrote. Throughout class he’d ask us to rate how well we understood the material and he’d spend a lot of time going over parts people found confusing. He makes all of his powerpoints and code available to students, along with practice problems and other resources. Participation wasn’t required, but he tried to make class interactive by asking lots of questions. He sent a mid-semester course evaluation for lab and made changes to the schedule based on people’s feedback. The class was planned to be 50 minute lecture, 10 minute break, then 50 minute lab, but by the end of the semester it became more like 65 minute lecture, 10 minute break, 35 minute lab. The TAs lead the lab (walk you through coding exercises in R), but Meyer is there in case there’s a question the TAs don’t know the answer to. There are 3 exams (mix of multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, math, and coding), 4 reflections (2 paragraphs each), weekly lab worksheets, and weekly extra credit quizzes. You have about a week to do each of them and no time limit (other than the deadline). All assignments are open note and it takes about 1-2 weeks to grade. Reading is optional but it’s very helpful to at least read the powerpoint slides before class. I personally don’t like statistics and only took this class as a requirement, but it was fairly easy because everything was open book and Meyer was always happy to answer questions.
First, don't take this class unless you're required to, but if you have to, take it with Meyer. Your entire grade is based on three exams and a weekly lab that helps you understand the material. He opens the exams for 10 days and they're completely open-note, as long as you cite your sources. I've been able to ace the exams because I'm allowed to refer back to previous PowerPoints and lectures and feel like I'm actually learning. Def recommend you taking it with him.
Def take this class with Meyer. He makes it so incredibly easy. The class breakdown is weekly quizzes, exams, short reflections, and labs. The weekly quizzes are completion based, the short reflections are about 2 paragraphs each, the exams are all open note, and the labs are very doable since they're also open note. He even goes back and regrades exams just to give points back. I'm a psych major who's not particularly passionate about research methods and data analysis, so I was kinda just trying to get this over with, and Meyer def accommodates that. He's also just a genuinely sweet and nice guy, and even though I went in not expecting to try so hard, I ended up doing it because I felt guilty if I disappointed him. Def recommend taking 3006 with him.
