Lectures are not very attended, but a really interesting topic. Tests are very short and don't cover a lot of material, so can be tricky. All powerpoints are posted and clickr questions are not given every class, making up 10% of your grade. Powerpoints are extremely easy to understand but fairly dull.
Professor McFarland is nice, very passionate , and has a background in clinical psychology, so she often tells us interesting stories from her work that are relevant to class. She is really nerdy and laughs at her own jokes but not in a haughty way. The comments from her past years made me nervous to take this class, but I LOVED it. Her tests aren't easy however, but she admits that at the beginning and curves appropriately. You do have to read the book , attend lecture, and study on top of that, but if you do you can get an A. Plus she now has clicker questions and gave a pretty easy extra credit assignment. She really knows what she's talking about, and the topics covered in class are so interesting. Would highly recommend for anyone willing to put in the work.
Professor McFarland is really nice. Although she can be very dry, her exams did not have anything that you would not expect. I did all the readings and ended up with an A. I also went to every single lecture. If you really want an A and simply go to class and do the readings, there will be no way you do not receive an A. 4 exams including the final, and you get to drop your lowest one. So, if you do well on the first three exams, you do not have to take the final.
If you're looking for an interesting psychology course, this is definitely NOT the one for you. Professor McFarland is nice and very helpful if you ever go to her for questions, but she goes through her slides rather quickly in class, so you'll have to go back and look at them while studying for exams. There are 4 exams total throughout the semester and the one with the lowest grade gets dropped. They aren't particularly hard if you do the textbook readings and thoroughly review the lecture slides, but let's be real, most of us don't have time for all that. Attendance isn't mandatory since she always posts the slides on Collab, but there are clicker questions in every class that count for 10% of your grade (exams make up the other 90%). The TA's weekly review sessions are also not that helpful– go to McFarland's office hours instead. Overall, the material is somewhat interesting but is NOT taught in an interesting way at all, and although the class isn't too difficult, it's not an easy A either. You're better off taking social psych or child psych.
I found this class to be super easy and the lectures to be informative. There is little to no work outside of class unless you want to read the textbook but she covers most of it. the only time i use the text book is to review for tests the day before. I think this class really depends on the person because a lot of people are struggling but i found the test super easy because some of the
test questions are clicker questions and they are simple applications of ideas or facts. she also curves largely and gives extra credit. I like professor McFarland, i dont really see whats wrong with her or the class.
