Review Summary Updated April 05, 2026

This class runs entirely on exams, so you will need to read the assigned textbook thoroughly and attend every lecture to handle the highly specific, memorization-heavy tests. Lectures are widely praised for being engaging and clarifying complex ideas, but the posted slides are too vague to rely on alone. A generous class curve typically pushes average exam grades into the B range, though the grading system is notoriously confusing and keeps your actual standing hidden until late in the term. If you are genuinely interested in cognitive psychology, the material is fascinating and rewarding, but the lack of assignments and relentless exam focus make this a serious challenge for anyone expecting an easy A.

I absolutely loved this class. It is a difficult class, but an A is possible you go to lecture, do the readings, and go to the review sessions before tests (they are super super helpful). Professor Willingham is a cool guy and good about answering questions in class and online on Collab. Sometimes he starts to lecture super fast but he gladly slows down if someone lets him know.

This was a really interesting course and Willingham is a great lecturer. He is able to speak articulately without being too fast or confusing which is a rare quality in my opinion. The material is interesting however it is fairly necessary to go to his lectures. The textbook will only take you so far in this class (unless he starts using the textbook that he is currently writing, I don't know when that will begin though) and the lecture slides are not very useful on their own. I highly recommend printing them out before the class if possible and taking notes on them. Overall I highly recommend, but take it at a time that you won't be tempted to sleep in and skip like I did.

This class is very conceptual and the tests are insanely frustrating. There are three midterms (one is dropped) and a final. Willingham is very smart but quite full of himself and patronizing. He also does a poor job of explaining things on a level that is understandable. The tests are annoying, but they are curved.

Fairly easy course. Willingham is cool and an interesting lecturer. Make sure to go to the lectures because the exams are very detailed and exactly from the lectures. I barely did any reading from the textbook and concentrated more on studying from the lectures. Would recommend to someone who is interested in the topic, has a background in psych or is willing to put in a decent amount of studying a week before the exams. (I got an A-)

Professor Willingham is an amazing professor, who really knows a lot about his field, and tries to make the class as interesting as possible with providing real life examples that you can relate to. All of the material is fascinating, so this is a class that is genuinely interesting. He also doesn't assign any work besides textbook readings, and even those are spread out among different days, so some days there is no work at all.

That being said, you do need to go to class every time and read the textbook when the syllabus says to. Willingham does it a little differently in that he likes students to read the textbook after his lecture, which actually helps you understand the reading better, so I would recommend following his advice on that. There are three midterms and a final. The lowest of the three midterms is dropped, and the other two count for 30% of your grade each, with the final counting as 40%. So, studying is important, and questions are about 50-50 between the lecture and the textbook, less so for the first midterm as there aren't many readings for the first one. He'll start off the first day by going over his exams, and how he wants the average grade on his exams to be a 70. This does sound frightening, but honestly just read the textbook, take notes on the book and in lecture, and genuinely study and you'll get above this for sure. He also curves the exams in a very weird way that is extremely complicated, so I would say the only bad part about this class is you don't know your true grade until you go into the final, after the third midterm. One final piece of advice on the exams: there are "test review" sections in the book after a number of pages, and they have a bunch of questions on the material. Go through those when you study for the text so you actually can answer questions about the text on the exam.

Overall, this class is a fascinating course with amazing material. As long as you read the textbook and actually study, you'll be fine. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone, even if they are not a psych major.

The main pro of this class is Professor Willingham, who got his phd from Harvard. He's a great lecturer and extremely smart. It's a nice class, but be careful because your entire grade comes from the exams. We all got boned on the final exam and moderately boned on the midterms. Besides that, the material is an interesting overview of cognitive psychology.

Concepts are simple and pretty straightforward. 3 midterms, lowest one dropped, then a final. Exams are probably 70% lecture and 30% reading, but very detailed on reading questions so make sure you read. Exams are fairly difficult, but it's still possible to get As on the exams if you don't study last minute. Willingham is a good lecturer and tries to make the class more enjoyable.

I was really interested in this class when I heard about it because I really liked psych in high school and was thinking of majoring in it but this class was the death of me. The concepts and topics were simple and similar to what I learned in high school going a little more in depth but the tests were ridiculous. I was absolutely certain going into all the tests that I knew everything I could cram in my brain about the topics but it was not enough. The questions are really tricky and even if you seem to know the answer or try to reason out the answer, you will still fail the tests. The tests just seemed to make simple concepts very complex. The prof was actually nice and lectures weren't that terrible to sit through but it seemed like he kind of assumed the students already knew a lot more information than expected and is very nit picky about the wording in questions to trick you. Plus the textbook was not that much better at elaborating on concepts. Overall do not recommend taking unless you want to tank your GPA.

I loved this class! I was a bit hesitant at first since I heard it was rather difficult which it was in some senses but very mangeable. There is no work besides readings so I loved that and the fact that one of three midterms was dropped. There is also a considerable curve at the end which was definitely needed. I loved Professor Willingham I thought he was an excellent lecturer and was very funny though one of my friends admitted to falling asleep almost every class so I guess it just comes down to whether the subject matter interests you or not. I ended up with a B+ which I was pretty proud of because I worked very hard in the beginning and end when the final came around. The thing that killed me was the second and third midterm. The first one I got a 90 even with putting all the reading until the last day so I got a bit too overconfident. The next two midterms were a lot more difficult and required a lot more reading but since I had put the readings off the first time and still did really well I thought I could get by. I ended up getting a 68 and 70 on the next two midterms because I waited to the last minute to do all my studying. Thankfully I got an 86 on the final which brought my grade up to a B+. Had I not messed up on just one of those two midterms though (since the lowest is dropped) I could have gotten an A no problem. Anyone who says this class is way too difficult or that the professor is bad probably did not put in their full effort or did not take the right approach to studying. The exams are tricky but given that there is no additional work gives room for a lot of study time.

There was no homework, so this course was a fairly manageable time commitment. The tests are pretty difficult, but your lowest score of the 3 midterms is dropped.
