One of my favorite classes at UVA.
Pros: Awesome professor who is highly knowledgable and helpful if you seek him out (he has had a really fascinating life and career), really interesting topic and the classes were always linked to the current events in the EU (made the class and concepts so much more applicable), and you learn how to write concisely and coherently.
Cons are that the professor is hard to get to know unless you seek him out, the memos are hard to adjust to if you're used to more analytical, fluffy writing, and it is challenging. Overall, a difficult but highly rewarding class. I really wish more professors at UVA taught like Pfefferkorn.
Tips: Do not miss class, take really good notes (he only tests you on stuff you learn in class), read the EU news every day, and ask for help with the memos.
A really amazing and interesting class with an eccentric professor. He had wild stories from all over europe and beyond. I was concerned taking this class as a first year since it is mainly 4th years but you really just have to pay attention and try on the papers and you will be fine. I got an A without doing all the reading, although it is interesting to read if you have the extra time!
