i didn't think professor fatton was arrogant. his lectures aren't very interesting and you have to write a lot, but the ideas of the class are pretty easy. there are a lot of readings, but i don't think it's necessary to read them all. a lot of them overlap. there's one midterm and a 10 page research paper. my ta was really great and helped a lot.
Excellent class. Really enjoyed Mr. Fatton and his knowledge of the third world. Great insight to things that I never find myself thinking about. Very inspirational and you leave the class wanting to change the world. The readings are enjoyable as well and I am certainly picky about the things I read for class.
The concepts covered in lecture are very broad, but very easy to understand and very interesting. discussion section was especially helpful in clarifying any questions about material from lecture so be sure to ask your TA if you need any help. the workload is also very manageable -- final grade based on discussion, midterm, final, and a research paper.
Very interesting class. I had a great TA, Daniel, that made it very easy to participate. 45 percent of your grade is a 10 pg paper 15 perent mindterm 20 percent participation, 20 percent final. The readings arent really necessary, he mostly tests on the topics he covers in class. The reading is only neccesary to participate in disussion, so if you just skim it, youll be fine. Overall this class is very interesting and you dont have to do all the reading to get a good grade.
The readings and lectures tended to be somewhat repetitive however that also helped to reinforce the point. The reading load was light but be forewarned that if you are not a good paper writer you should avoid taking this class as about half of your grade is dependent upon a ten page research paper.
Really awesome class. There's one paper, a midterm, and a final. Very manageable work load. Readings are plentiful but they all kind of reinforce each other/are the sorts of things you'd see in a newsmagazine so you'll want to do them. Fatton is very articulate and clear, his mild French/Haitian accent is awesome! Its the only politics class that emphasizes poverty, underdevelopment, and the third world so its a nice change to focus on the little guys for once.
This is a good introductory course to issues which are very important in the developing world. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the issues such as poverty, inequality, foreign aid, globalization and the effects of groups such as the World Bank/IMF. I think that for a lot of people, this class helped clear up misconceptions about why the developing world is poor. Nevertheless, I thought that the class was very theory-based, which is something I didn't like. I wanted to learn more about specific case studies. Although if you like theory, I recommend that you take this class! There's only three grades, the midterm, paper (which is 45% of your grade), and the final. This means that if you kinda screw up on one thing, its a little bit hard to bring your grade up. One word of advice: the topics are pretty extensive, and there's a lot of reading, and so you might feel overwhelmed during the tests, but if you focus on the class lectures and the main ideas, you'll be completely fine!
