Professor Hawkins is super sweet and genuinely care about each student in her class. I took the Trump and White Christian America class and I found it well worth it. A lot of the books are similar in theme and information so once you've read one of the books you have kind of read them all, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. The class time is mostly discussion-based, do the readings (or have a general idea about the readings) and come to class and talk about it. It's pretty low pressure though I only would talk two or three times during the 3 hour long class and that seemed sufficient. Outside of discussion there's a Review A Classic assignment where you read a book about the class topic and then right a review/analysis on its argument, super easy. The final paper is the bulk of the work and each student had to come up with an original topic. Find a topic early on and that helps a lot and Larycia has small little progress assignments that are more like completion grades. The paper itself is going to be like 30 pages so don't put it off till a week before like I did. Prof Hawkins hosts a dinner for paper presentations and a question and answer period and its all super low stress and fun. I got an A in the class and I really enjoyed the course material so overall I reccomend!
Absolutely LOVED Professor Hawkins. She is SO SO smart and it shows. Her classes are insightful and the homework/assignments honestly just make sense. Assignments consist of weekly insights where you comment on the readings, a few short papers regarding the topics covered in class, midterm, and a final project. The final project is an art project which was really weird for me but Professor Hawkins pushes you to be vulnerable and doesn't stress the importance of a letter grade on it (everyone got 100). Overall the work load is very doable. Going to class is also pretty important but she ended up cancelling class a fair amount. More importantly though Professor Hawkins always went out of her way to be there for her students. She encouraged us to reach out even if it didn't have anything to do with academics. 10/10 class and wish I had taken another class with her!
the absolute best teacher and one of the best courses i've ever taken. if you have the chance take it or you'll regret it. she is the most understanding professor of all time, she understands mental health and failure and typical college life and the best person to talk your concerns through. she cares about students beyond the classroom which is so rare. the work and readings are very manageable -- at the beginning of the course you choose what group you're in and each class alternating groups submit a discussion post for topics to discuss in class. she doesn't force people to speak in class, but she's very encouraging and everyone is always so open and vulnerable. 10/10 class. 12/10 woman. <3
Professor Hawkins is the kindest and most genuinely down to earth professor I have ever had. She cares about the wellbeing of each of her students above all else and is always there to chat (or text) with. Her class was super engaging and based a lot around class discussion and our submitted insights (insights were reading responses that were due every couple of weeks — in the beginning of the semester we were placed into groups 1-5, each group had a different week to submit insights and lead class discussions). In addition to insights, the main grades for the class were 3 short papers (around 750 words) and a final art project that could be done collaboratively or solo, acting as a final reflection on the class.
Professor Hawkins is an amazing human being and incredibly knowledgeable. The class content itself was great (the class was Race & the Obama Presidency) and the books are actually good readings. The class was an easy A, and if you can't scrape by at least a B that's definitely on you, as Larycia is the most accommodating professor I have ever had. If you want a structured and organized class though, I'd try to find another, as Larycia sacrificed organization and structure for leniency since it was online/during the pandemic/during a presidential election.
