This was probably my favorite class at UVA so far. The first few weeks it seems horrible but as you get to know the other students and Mr. Sitman better it's really great. I'm looking into doing a Government minor and I think that this class really prepared me for future politics seminars but at the same time the class wasn't super dense. The reading can be unbearable at times, but if need be can be done before the midterm and final. Sitman provides extensive comments on everything, not only helping you to do better on future papers/tests but also in other classes. Class is 2 papers, one midterm, and one final, and lots of class discussion. I absolutely loved it and anyone interested in American history of the Founding would love it too.
This is definitely my favorite class at UVA so far. Sitman is a great teacher, always open to discussion and always clearly explaining the readings (if you listen during class you'll be well prepared for the exams). The class and readings cover a broad span of subjects (it's more of a history of politics class), which means none of the material gets too dense or useless. I felt like this was the best foundation I could have for continuing in politics.
Took this class Fall 2011 as a 4th year, and is one of my top 5 favorite classes of college. He's a low-key but engaging lecturer, and has no issue with going on tangents regardless of their connection to the course. Tough to pinpoint his political leanings, does a good job straddling the line. TAKE THIS IF YOU CAN, he's a lenient grader on papers and it's a class you'll almost look forward to
I loved Professor Sitman, I think he's one of the best politics professors I've had at UVA. The papers are graded pretty hard, but the subject matter is incredibly interesting. I don't like American politics but the class covered theory that I've never learned before about the founding; it wasn't a cookie-cutter American founding class. Overall amazing class.
Sitman is very biased and graded harshly for no reason. His class was dreadful to wake up early for every MWF. My friend took Russell and got an A even though I spent way more time than him reading the assignments. Be prepared to be quizzed on readings in class and if you don't know the material every day then he will remember when he grades your papers. Avoid Sitman at all costs. I recommend Russel
