I took this class being slightly artistic but not having taken any art classes in high school… so I had little experience. I can say that I have come a long way in my drawing abilities thanks to professor Pheobus-mumtaz, more so than I expected when I signed up for the class (I really just wanted something to fulfill my fine arts requirement in the College). The class itself is 2.5 hours long, but it is ALL drawing, no lecture, and she gives you a break in the middle to go to the fine arts cafe and get a snack. You can talk during class so take it with a friend! Basically you are drawing the whole time and she is walking around talking to students and giving advice.
Homework is time-consuming; HOWEVER, it is just one art project a week that is usually a still life. For me, this meant sitting down on a Sunday afternoon in my room, listening to music and drawing from 2-6pm or something around that amount of time. 4-5 hours was the usual, but it was always a relaxing break from doing homework problems and boring readings. As far as grading goes, I think it is mostly on effort… however, since you practice the skills in class, there is definitely a correlation between effort and how good your drawing comes out. If you're terrible at art, don't take it, but if you have some skill that can be a base you'll do fine! Again, I did not take art classes ever in my life and I have gotten As and A+ on every homework assignment.
Overall, recommend the class! I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Everyone in my class seems to enjoy it.
