Truly my favorite professor at UVA by far! Dr. Jency is a breath of fresh air and her class was a highlight this semester! Physics is a really hard subject, but Dr. Jency will make it so much more easier. Dr. Jency tries to make herself as available to students, and in fact, this leads to her office hours going longer than planned, because she wants to make sure every student gets their question answered. She truly is a one of a kind and if you can get her, take her!! Each week, you are supposed to do a weekly report, weekly homework, and a weekly quiz. You can go to office hours for either Jency or her TA's to ask questions about these assignments, these office hours are so helpful. The two midterm exams were not that much harder than the practice midterm, so make sure to do that. If you put in the effort and reach out when you need help, you will succeed and Dr. Jency will be one of your biggest supporters!
Dr. Jency is an absolute blessing to the UVA Physics department! I did not take Physics in high school and honestly kind of dreaded this class but she made the environment so conducive for success. She is very understanding, caring, and made sure that her class was not a major source of stress for her students.
The class is structured in a way that promotes collaboration with peers (5 mins reading quiz, 15 mins lecture, and the remaining 30 mins is collaborative problem-solving), so make sure you form a good relationship with your tablemates! She also posts pre-lecture videos and notes, so I would recommend at least looking through the pre-lecture summary notes as they're helpful for the quizzes at the beginning of the lectures. There is quite a bit of homework (problem set, summary report, and quiz every week) but they're really good preparation for the exams and Physics requires a lot of practice to do well in so it's helpful in the long run. The midterms were very fair and the problems are similar to the ones she gives you for practice. The final was difficult since she had to rush some of the later content after Thanksgiving break, but everything is weighted very fairly!
Take Physics with Jency!!! #tCFF23
One of the best professors I have had at UVA! Every quality you would want in a professor: kind, optimistic, organized, caring, etc. She provides a ton of resources to succeed and help if needed. She is receptive to feedback about the structure of the course and willing to move deadlines to the benefit of her students. Her pre-lecture videos and in-class lecture demos were enough for me to understand the content, and her worksheets/homeworks were great ways to practice problems and apply concepts. The exams were super doable/fair and not trying to trick you. You do need to keep up with all the assignments because it can be a lot (weekly quizzes, weekly reports, homeworks, pre-lecture videos) but it is certainly manageable and putting in as much effort as possible will help boost your grade in the end. Definitely recommend! #tCFF23
I was TERRIBLE at physics in high school but Jency made physics so much easier to understand (and more enjoyable!). She was super caring and understanding of students as well and would push back due dates when we had midterms in other classes. It was also clear to students that Jency has a passion for physics and teaching and this helped my peers and I get excited about physics too! Jency also provides lots of examples that are similar to what you see on the midterms & final! However, I will say the workload for this class is a lot and I would spend a majority of my time working on assignments for this class so be sure to be on top of your work. I will say though this class was super well organized. We had a master google sheet with all of the assignments and due dates which was so helpful. Pick Jency!!!
Jency is amazing!! She is an effective instructor, and is so kind and understanding. She is also clearly enthusiastic about the topic (her demonstrations are so fun).
As for the course itself, she provides every resource needed for success. She provides an abundance of practice problems and is helpful in office hours. You also get an equation sheet on exams, which is an utter life-saver. Tbh I only used the textbook to clarify things I didn't understand from lectures (which was very rare!).
The midterms were fair and easy to study for. The final was a tad tricky, but it's buffered by so many other grades.
Take physics with Jency! #tCFF23
You could not have a better physics professor than Jency. She is so kind, and really cares about her students. She clearly has a passion for Physics, but explains each concept in simple-to-understand ways and using physical demonstrations. She wants to get to know everyone in her class as a person & not just as a student, and she makes it a goal to make conversation with you. Her grading is also very fair. I am not a good test-taker, but I still did well in the class because of the weight of homework, quizzes, and weekly reports. I can't recommend her enough!! CHOOSE JENCY! #tCFF23
Amazing class! Dr. Jency is so nice and considerate and cares deeply about her students. She is very understanding and is happy to give extensions for missed assignments. As someone who hated physics in high school and isn't good at math, I highly recommend you take this class with Dr. Jency. She makes it very understandable and never tries to trick you on the exams!

Jency is an incredible instructor! I went in this course hoping to gain a better understanding of physics in general, but was a bit intimidated based on prior high school physics courses. This course was so well-structured. Jency has a massive spreadsheet where she puts every worksheet, every pre-lecture video, and essentially lists out every topic covered throughout the semester. The course is structured in a sort of flipped classroom way, where class time is mostly used doing practice problems to reinforce knowledge. The way that Jency explains concepts along with her providing many demonstrations allows this flipped classroom to be incredibly effective (something that is rare in my opinion). It's a lot of work, as any physics course is, but Jency cares about her students doing well and does not create impossible tests, something which alleviates stress for the many premed students who are concerned that this will tank their grade. If you have to take this class, take it with her for sure, she is the best!
Dr. Jency is a breath of fresh air to the physics department at UVA. Compared to the professors of past semesters, she is very accommodating her class is frankly very doable for an A if you study. As long as you re-do and practice her Worksheets, Chapter Reviews, and Practice Exams, you are nearly guaranteed an A in this class. Be sure to go to Office Hours for any help regarding concepts or assigned Homework. Don't bother reading the textbook, you can pretty much understand everything you need to from her lectures. She also records all lectures on Zoom, so you don't need to be physically in-person, but she does have quick, easy 1-2 question quizzes you have to follow along live during lecture to be a part of (they are a component of your total grade). TLDR: this class is an easy A if you study the materials she explicitly says to look at.
