The subject of Indian art is an interesting one and you learn a lot about it in this class and in fairly straight-forward way. However, your grade is based purely off of a midterm and final so you have to do well -- and Ehnbom is not the easiest grader (but some people get his TA grader who, at least this year, was easier) I would recommend this class for art history majors who need to fulfill their non-western requirement or if you are interested in India, Indian religions, or Indian art.
This class was great and really got me interested in Art History which I'm now majoring in. Ehnbom is a great lecturer, he's sarcastic and funny so he keeps you interested despite the sometimes dry material. Overall, Indian art is very interesting and he spends a lot of time going over the major themes of Indian art throughout history which I think is more interesting than just memorizing slides. The only grades are the midterm and the final so it's important to do well on those. I barely did any of the reading because it's really just there to reinforce his lectures. All in all, a great class and a great professor! I loved it!
Ehnbom can be a little grumpy and strict about some things, but he's extremely fair. Test questions are straight from lectures and almost none of the reading is actually necessary to do well. Just attend every lecture and take good notes and you'll be golden for the quizzes and midterms. He repeats himself frequently and if he doesn't repeat something, it won't be on the test.
The material is interesting (but I'm speaking as a prospective art history major) and doesn't require much "interpretation"--approach it like a history class with images.
Ehnbom comes across as strict (especially the first few weeks) but he really is a nice guy with some good stories. Going to lecture and taking good notes is important but reading isn't. It seems like a lot of info but he only tests you on things he has talked about over and over. Taking this course will make you more interested in Indian art and India in general and while he seems like a scary guy he's extremely knowledgeable.
