Professor Goedde is incredibly knowledgeable about Dutch and Flemish art, and it’s impressive how he can talk about any aspect of any image in his slideshows. That being said, this class has a lot of content. Goedde can go through dozens of paintings in a single lecture (I ended up with around 90 typed pages of notes from the semester), and while he doesn’t include every single image he shows on the assessments, he expects students to be able to discuss any of 150-250+ artworks (many of which look similar) for each exam. The timing of the lecture from 3:30-4:45 this semester combined with the slideshow structure of an art historical survey definitely made me doze off a few times, as while Goedde is well-versed in the subject, he isn’t the most engaging lecturer. The course is structured with a quiz (10%), a midterm (30%), and a final (60%) with emphasis placed on improvement, so if you have an A- from the first two assessments, it’s still possible to get an A in the class. Readings can be interesting but they’re definitely optional—all the information you need to succeed in the class can be gained in lecture (so don’t bother buying the books from the bookstore unless you actually want them). I found myself liking this class the most at the end of the semester when reviewing for finals, since watching lecture recordings back-to-back on my own time allowed me to actually put all of the content together and appreciate the class for what it was. Overall, I’d recommend this class mainly for art history majors or minors, since the department has more engaging classes for those just looking to dip their toes into the subject. #tCFF23
This is an incredible class. Professor Goedde is very knowledgeable and his lectures are enjoyable. I came in without any knowledge of Netherlandish Baroque art but ended up appreciating it and its artists. This class is very original, which means professor Goedde often gives his own understanding on the topics so taking good notes is extremely important. The class is also well structured. We first followed the life times of great masters and then went through parallel development of artist trends. By the very end, everything falls into place and you start to understand art of this period in a holistic way.
I loved this class. Goedde is an incredibly knowledgeable lecturer who was clearly deeply engaged in the subject matter at hand. We went through paintings at a breakneck pace (which was frustrating only because he didn't put up titles or dates on his slides). Most of the readings were supposedly only "recommended," but I found them to be very useful and interesting. We had one quiz and two exams. There were an inordinate number of images we had to know (about 100-300) for each, but Goedde was very lenient about slide IDs. I.e. we just had to describe the subject of the painting, dates could be off by 5 years, and we could get full credit with the wrong artist's name as long as our explanation was valid. This makes a lot of sense when you better understand the (especially Dutch) art scene at the time. Even though the number of images was intimidating, if you did the readings/paid attention in lecture you could have a decent sense of what was going to be quizzed on - Goedde was good about only choosing images that were representative of the artist or style.
***Goedde would give the class a couple minute break after 50 or so minutes of lecture, which was very nice and thoughtful of him (an hour and 15 minutes is a looong time!)
I LOVED this class! If I had more free electives, I'd take any class offered by Prof. Goedde in a heartbeat.
His lectures are fantastic as he is very enthusiastic about Dutch art. My favorite part was when he'd explain the symbolism replete in the paintings - in a way, they were a sort of medieval propaganda.
His quizzes are not that hard - he gives you a list of terms which you must identify. Be sure to identify the who/what/when, but also the SIGNIFICANCE of each term. If you pay attention to his lectures and take good notes, you should be fine. Just review those notes several days before the quiz, not the day before. For me, the hardest part about this course was waking up for it.
I cannot recommend this professor more highly.
