Great class. Absolutely loved Professor Rubin. He made lectures engaging and interesting and really knew how to connect with his students. Learned a lot about the history of music and explored music that I never would've considered listening to. My TA was fantastic and always offered advice and suggestions on how to write our papers. Assignments are not difficult at all and are actually really fun because they are so open-ended and give you a lot of freedom to choose whatever you want to write about. Highly recommend taking this class.
While it's not a HARD class, there is quite a bit of reading each week, two papers, and a take-home midterm and final, both of which consist of two papers in themselves. Do not take this class if you don't like reading and writing, and certainly not if you aren't interested in music. If you're fine with these things and like the subject, then you'll probably enjoy it. Rubin is a decent professor and was able to make lectures interesting at times, but many lectures seemed like a waste of time. I know my experience was different from other people's because my TA was a harsher grader than the others, and essentially the entire grade is dependent on your writing that the TA grades. Older reviews for this class make it seem like it's the easiest class you'll ever take, but if you hate writing like I do and get a harder TA, it'll be a bigger nuisance than it's worth.
Grading was very inconsistent across TA's. I had one of the easier TA's and she was instructed by Rubin to be harsher on grading as the semester went on. Don't take this class looking for an easy A. Lecture was boring and unhelpful (Rubin played music from Spotify and images from Google Images the whole time). Could have been an interesting class but needs to be restructured.
