This was not an easy class, but one I thoroughly enjoyed. Professor Kelly not only REALLY knew his stuff but was excellent at teaching it and was hilarious to boot. Definitely requires doing the weekly reading to excel but the home work isn't too bad- especially working in groups. This was my favorite class of the semester and I would love to have Professor Kelly again.
Kelly is a great guy, but the subject was very dry and did not interest me at all. Lots of reading, and the new WileyPlus online HW system is kind of annoying to work with. Don't take this unless you're into mechanical/chemical/materials engineering, and if you do end up in it otherwise, DON'T SLACK!
Professor Kelly is a very good instructor. He takes teaching very seriously and it shows. The class itself can be a little boring if Material Science isn't an interest of yours, but I would highly suggest it otherwise.
The homework problem sets can be tricky but the tests problems are generally not any harder.
I made the mistake of thinking the multiple choice test questions were single-answer, they're not!
I would recommend this course to anyone who wants a challenging course.
Fall 2024 saw the class co-taught by R Kelly and A Zhang, which may lead to the way our class was run being dissimilar or not to how others in the past or future may be conducted. Roughly weekly HW and quizzes, HW is not easy, do it in a group and it is graded harshly on accuracy. Two midterms are take home, final is take home, all still time limited digitally, Assignment and exam grades are low, but made up for by an obscene amount of extra credit opportunities, so do them all. The GPA listed on here (as of F24) is much lower than what it was for our semester, although that could be accounted to A Zhang handling most of the grading, would recommend, and don't be scared by the GPA on here which I was wary of before taking the course.
Pay attention in lecture and then you shouldn't have to do much textbook reading. Would definitely recommend to anyone with an interest and willingness to put in the work.
