I learned a lot about the materials around us than I would in an intro science class or anywhere else; it's a lot of real world applications. The only thing was...his voice made me want to go to sleep. I loved the course and the professor is very knowledgeable. Just...his..voice...haha. I studied the day before looking over the slides, study guides, past exam, and my measly notes, and got 88-90's on the tests. I ended up with an A because of those 30 extra credit attendance points. hint: GO TO CLASS!
Shiflet is hilarious and super smart. Go to class and get an entire 10% bonus for your grade. The tests are easy if you go to class which is even more of a reason to go. Shiflet also makes a ton of sarcastic jokes that require intelligence to understand so it was hilarious to watch the athletes struggle to understand why the class was laughing. GREAT CLASS
Great class. 3 tests of 50 multiple choice questions. Shiflet is hilarious, engaging, and passionate about the material. Even though he knows everything about material science, he knows how to sell the material to mainly humanities majors who have no knowledge in the area and how to make it interesting for them.
Shiflet is easily one of the greatest professors at this university. He knows so much about scientific processes that he knows what to leave out and what to include. In his syllabus, he claims that this class is harder than any other science class in that you have to understand concepts rather than do math, like in intro chemistry. However, it's extremely easy. He's right about the conceptual part--some things are intriguing, while others are common sense. There is zero homework, three exams at 100 points each, and up to 30 extra credit points for missing 4 classes or less. So, as long as you average an 80 on your tests and miss no more than 4 classes, you'll end up with a 90. The exams are ridiculously easy and are largely based on the practice exams he posts on Collab. I do suggest you take notes and pay attention, because then you won't have to look over his lengthy slideshows when studying for exams. In fact, I took notes and paid attention and only needed about 4 hours to study for each exam (just looked at my notes from class, the online readings, and the study guides he posted). There's honestly no reason you should get below an A, unless you half-ass your way through the class. Don't disrupt class, use your phone, or fall asleep, because he will either kick you out, call you out in class, or make you talk to him at the end. He does some interesting experiments/lessons in class, so it becomes fairly enjoyable. Also, he makes some of the funniest jokes ever and throws out a lot of good one-liners under his breath. This class is a must-take, and I guarantee you will learn a lot about things you never even think about. Plus, he'll have you laughing and shaking your head at his witty remarks. Great class, great guy, easy A.
Attendance is taken; if you miss less than a certain amount of classes, you get free bonus points attached to your final course grade, which is composed of 3 midterm exams. Some of the material can be quite boring depending on your preferences, but I think this class is one of the few classes at UVA that would interest all types of students due to the course's diverse coverage of materials
I personally didn't find the subject matter to be very enthralling but this is a good class for general requirements as you will get an A if you just do the readings and ask Shiflet to explain anything you're not grasping. He loves what he does, is very knowledgable, and is a generally cool guy (unless you come to his lecture and goof off, then he'll flip out). He takes attendance and gives you a TON of extra credit just for showing up.
i love shiflet! he is very funny in a subtle way. the exams are not a piece of cake though. each one gets harder, so if you do well on the first one, don't expect to get the same grade as easily on the next. attendance points help so much! he has a lot of office hours and is very helpful. he is also extremely knowledgeable about the topic and has a lot of good stories to tell. lecturers may be boring at times, but just bear through them to get those attendance points!
Such an easy class! take it if you can! all you have to do is go to class and study the night before each exam. the only grades in the class come from 3 (pretty easy) 100 point exams so 300 points total. then, if you miss less than 4 classes throughout the semester, you get 30 points added onto your final grade at the end! It's cake
Great class. Shiflet is one the most knowledgeable, ardent, and friendly professors I've had or heard of. The class atmosphere is relaxed and friendly but Shiflet commands respect. The class, while easy and not demanding in the least, requires a small bit of study to get an A. A few concepts are tricky but this class is worthwhile. Possibly an easy A but you do need to put in a little work.
Very interesting class. The only assignments are the 3 exams, plus he gives a big bonus for attendance. Shiflet has a strict no laptop, no cellphone policy. However, he is extremely knowledgeable, and emphasizes understanding over memorization. I highly recommend taking this class, even if only for an easy A.
This is by far one of the easier classes you can take if you're an engineer. The layout of the class is: 3 quizzes each worth 100 points, and an attendance bonus of up to 30 points (that's 10%!). You can go to class and not pay attention at all, and study the night before tests and still pull off an A at the end of the semester if you get the attendance bonus. As for the material of the course, it is mildly interesting if you're somewhat into history and materials science. Otherwise, it's kinda boring. Word of caution: don't let Shiflet catch you surfing the web or texting in class; he'll kick you out.
It only an easy because of the extra points he gives for attendance. It's hard because it sucks going to class everyday when the notes are on lecture, his tests are difficult, and materials that shape civilization is just a very dull subject. BUT you get the extra points, so if you attend class your B turns into an A...so it may be worth it, only at the end.
Wayy easy class. I didn't study for the first two tests, studied for the third, went to class, and got a B. I should've gotten an A, but whatever. He makes the class interesting, but there were some really dull days. Overall, I liked it. It's THE easy engineering class, and suggest it to anyone who needs to fullfill a science/technical elective. No homework, three tests, and he posts a ton of study material for them.
For the most part, engineering students take this class because it is easy and it meets a science elective. However, the class can be fairly interesting and Shiflet seems to really like what he is teaching. You can learn a bit of knowledge on a lot of topics with little effort. The class consist of only three multiple choice exams. Based on attendance, you can also gain a large amount of extra points on top of your exam scores. Highly recommended.
Course structure has changed. He no longer has different people come in every week, he just presents his own materials. He's a really interesting teacher and the class is super easy. Your grade is based mostly on attendance, although there are also a few tests. If you pay attention in class, you don't really need to study for the tests to do fine.
This class is extremely easy. The structure is different professors come in and lecture on different topics. The test questions come from a question bank that's on toolkit (with all the answers). If you attend enough classes, you may be exempt from the last test. It's possible to learn a lot from the class. It just depends on how much effort you put into it.
