Review is for her Hannibal class. Super fun, super creative, I learned a lot. If you like watching tv shows and talking about them, this is truly the class for you. You will analyze everything about it. I wasn't a huge fan of Hannibal after the second season so I started to lose a tad of interest but never because of her. She made me want to show up to class. She was super understanding when I was sick, and the projects and essays that she assigns are super fun. I wrote two short essays and edited a short video remix of the show. Great class. Super fun, easy and it always brightened my day. I definitely recommend it. The readings honestly are a bit for your own pleasure if you want to read more, but they definitely have interesting material. we got to meet a bunch of people that were part of the production in zoom meetings so that was super cool. Your homework is literally watching episodes of the show haha. In the discussion, do know your stuff. Learn the vocabularly, it makes the whole difference in how enganging the conversation is. There's weekly discussion questions and answers in discord, it took me like ten to twenty minutes to do them, maybe less. But they are honestly just a space to say your thoughts. There's no right or wrong answer, so use that to truly explore your thoughts about the question and about the show. The moment I stopped trying to make them perfect, they became so much more fun to write. The question was the only thing that does take a bit of thinking about.
This review is in reference to Dr. Morimoto's course on Hong Kong Film. I like Dr. Morimoto and hope that she teaches at UVA again. The course structure changed a good deal throughout the semester (in large part because of COVID-19) but Dr. Morimoto was very fair and reasonable in adapting the course to fit everyone's needs. The films watched were also quite interesting, ranging from older black and white films to newer films that explore the liminal cultural identities associated with the spaces of Hong Kong. If offered again, I would recommend this course for the Global Media requirement for Media Studies or for anyone interested in cultural analysis in film.
