This class is by far the best class at UVA. Korte is so knowledgeable of cinematography and you get to watch some really entertaining movies. You learn so much about different shots and why certain scenes are filmed the way they are. I will never look at a nother movie the same. You dont have to do the reading really, but for the midterm you need to look at the glossary in the back of the book and know the bold words that are in the chapters he assigns. My favorite class at UVA by far
The class sounds easy but is absolutely not unless you are very interested in film and cinematic technique. The professor is nice, but he is a horrible teacher. His lectures are very dull as he just stands there and speaks into a microphone. Also, his lectures have no structure to them and he frequently goes on tangents. Finally, there are only two exams (one midterm, one final) that are graded very subjectively. Overall a course that would seem easy, but is not very interesting and tough to do well in.
A lot of people take this class thinking it will be an easy A. I don't think that's exactly the case, especially if you're not interested in film and don't understand the artistic aspects rather than just the literary aspects of film. The professor is very interesting and has a lot to say about all the movies, but again if your'e not into this you will probably find it really boring. Your grade consists of a midterm and a final, composed of a multiple choice part and an in class essay. I would recommend taking this class only if it's something you find interesting, because it probably won't be super easy.
