The math department is lucky to have Professor Ono. He expects a lot from his students and can seem a bit intimidating at first, but he is one of the most effective teachers I've had for a math class and is a teacher who truly tries to get to know every one of his students individually. I highly recommend going to office hours on a weekly basis and forming a good relationship with him because it will make you feel much more comfortable asking questions. The set up of the course is great. There are typically weekly homework assignments (15% of overall grade), but they are easy to do well on because each problem is presented by someone in the class so you will know what the right answers are before turning in the final product. Those homework presentations make up your participation grade (10% of final grade). As long as you present 2-3 times throughout the semester, you will get the full credit for participation! There are two mandatory exams during the semester which make up 37.5% of your grade each. This makes the final exam optional. He gives you a "preliminary" grade about a week before the scheduled final exam, so if you're happy with your "preliminary" grade being you final course grade, you don't have to take the final! If not, you can take the final exam, and the two midterm exams instead make up 25% of your grade each, as does the final exam (75% of course grade made up of exams). If you're able to take 3354 with Ken, DO IT. It was a great pleasure to learn from such an accomplished mathematician (seriously, just check out his Wikipedia page!!).
