He cares about his student but is a OKAY lecturer. There were many time that the class could not keep up with his and he told us to used are phones and take picture. Beside that the was a laid back class. You have weekly homework and make sure you study the questions because there will be at least 4 questions on the exams that were homework questions.
Would love to know the purpose of this course; I'd say 2/3 of my section was there as a pre-req to STAT 3120, the other third for the major. This course--as with many in the department--seemed to sit by itself, without connection to a larger project (ie. calculus' strong connection to the physical world) given the disparate(?) objectives of the students in the class.
Malek is an a great force at midday. He is prepared for questions, occasionally goofs up on board calculations, but more than makes up for it with his relentless engagement with the students. We are constantly and rightfully questioned and tested, though not cold called or anything.
His use of metaphor is intrepid for a math class, often relating the concepts--even the examples--to flora, fauna, and extranea from his grad school days.
Tests were fair. He clearly knows how to differentiate students. Textbook was boring, but clear when needed, as was often needed when doing homework and studying.
Good professor. Difficult content. I don’t like the textbook. If the textbook is by Rick Durret, make sure to get the corrected version.
The gist of this class: do the homework’s and do them well. Afterwards, study the questions which he posted solutions to. Redo the questions and study the solutions until you understand the concepts behind the question and can get the question correct. Do this and you will do well.
Helpful in office hours. You need to memorize a bit for the first 2 tests, but mostly just memorize what you need to know to do the homeworks.
I have mixed feelings about this class. The content wasn't hard overall. Week by week, it was not hard to get through the homeworks and get good grades on them. The two midterms (take home, timed, closed book but with cheat sheet) weren't too bad either. The final (in person, with cheat sheet) was not great though. It felt harddddddddddd. That final just did not feel like the midterms or the hw. You've gotta know your stuff, so repping practice problems is your best bet to study. I think it's difficult to end this class with lower than a B though, so take that as you will.
The professor deserves his own paragraph. He's so kind and sweet, but sometimes he gets a little... frazzled? He's definitely unique in his own way. Not a bad professor, not the greatest either. Just write down everything he writes on the board because some seemingly random/'useless' computation he does in class may just be the answer to something in hw or exam.
