I'd recommend this course only if you really enjoy math. The first few weeks are tough, but if you stick it out, it is worth it. Anyone can make it through this class if they care enough, but in terms of pacing, it is arguably one of the hardest first-year focused classes. Make sure to understand what is going on in each lecture and try to reach a point where you can follow along while grasping each step. The class has a pretty linear progression, so make sure to comprehend the earlier parts of the class. Overall, it is a great foundation for higher-level maths, especially for math majors.
The class is curved to a B+ average, with Dr. Hayes implementing a midterm forgiveness policy, meaning if you do better on the final, your grade would go from 30% midterm, 45% final to 15% midterm, 60% final. The weekly homework and 15 minute comprehension quizzes make up 20% and 5% respectively.
Homework is a 5-7 question problem set, each with 1-4 parts. It took me, on average, around an hour to complete one problem, so manage your time well. It is graded on correctness and (thankfully) curved.
Hayes is an excellent professor, and it's clear that he cares about the subject from his lectures. Pick his brain about course selection and higher-level topics.
