MATH 1320

ZACH IS THE MAAAAN! Calc II is a tough nut to crack, but Zach explains everything in such a digestible way and always encourages you stop and ask questions without judgment. The Prep Videos and WebAssigns are kind of annoying to keep up with, but they are helpful in the long run. We also had quizzes almost every week during the discussion sections, and his quizzes can be on the harder side sometimes, so make sure you prepare for them!

He holds extra office hours for us near exams season, and he tries to make himself available for us outside of his normal office hours as well! He is extremely patient and understanding, and genuinely cares about his students' success. Additionally, he tried to connect with students on a personal level as well -- he became more like a friend as the semester progressed. My calculus experience in high school was quite horrendous, but this was definitely my favorite class this semester, and all the credit goes to him. TAKE CALC II WITH ZACH! #tCFfall22

TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ZACH GATES!!!!! This course itself is difficult, but it was made extremely enjoyable by Professor Gates. He is a fantastic instructor, able to make complicated things seem simple. He listened to our input and really listened to our questions and answered them in detail. You will never feel like you don't belong in his classroom. Not only is he great at teaching the concepts, but he also values each and every one of his students for who they are as people. He truly wanted to get to know us and also cared about how we were doing as people, always understanding if we needed an extension or some extra help because we were sick or just in a bad place. This was my first semester in college, and I never could have imagined having a professor that cares so deeply about the students academically and as human beings. Beyond that, he makes class enjoyable with his sense of humor and teaching style. If you are able to, I highly recommend taking this class with Professor Gates.
The class itself definitely poses some difficulty, and things like webassign and prep videos definitely got annoying, but class itself was always engaging and enjoyable. The exams are hard, so studying for those is important (I learned that the hard way) but it is definitely doable and the professors do try to make all of the work fair.
Just to reiterate, ZACH GATES IS AMAZING AND YOU WILL LOVE TAKING THIS CLASS WITH HIM! Truly an amazing professor and human being.

Zach Gates is the best! Calculus II is a notoriously difficult course but Zach does a great job of making it understandable! He doesn't assume that you fully understand the topics from the prep-videos, and takes the time in class to answer questions and explain concepts. Most importantly, Zach creates a classroom environment in which everyone feels welcome and included. Outside of the classroom, Zach hosts frequent office hours to walk through homework, review assessments, or just talk. One of the best things about this course is that by the end of it I felt I truly knew Zach as a person and as a friend. You can really tell that he genuinely cares about his students. Don't be mistaken, the class is still a lot of work. It takes time and practice to master the concepts covered in the course. I routinely put 7+ hours a week into the class, between WebAssign homework and studying for the weekly quizzes. However it is very manageable if you work hard and plan it out, something Zach is more than willing to help you make happen.
