Professor Sonkin is an alright teacher. He is tough to understand at first because of his thick Russian accent but you get used to it quickly. His style of teaching didn't work too well for me as pretty much all he does in lecture is very quickly write problems on the board and solve them without doing a ton of explaining. I had to use the textbook, office hours, and YouTube professors (Professor Leonard is GREAT), in order to really understand the material. Exam 1 is easy, but exam 2 is IMPOSSIBLE. The final was very fairly written. Based on experiences I have heard of with other professors, I would say you can't get much better than Dmitriy. He truly cares about each of his students and if you visit him in office hours you will understand the material better. He gives lots of quizzes but they help you understand the material really well and he ends up giving lots of extra credit, so don't worry about your quiz grade.
Ok, so I took math1210 with Dmitriy, not 1220 (he teaches this class though course forum for some reason doesn't have him listed) and let me tell you, this guy is the best professor. He is extremely kind, patient, and clearly loves teaching math. He comes off as timid and quiet at first (beware, he does have a very quiet voice and does't use a microphone, and that paired with his slight Russian accent can make class a little difficult sometimes) but he seriously will go above and beyond for his students. He is always encouraging us to ask whatever questions we have during class, and no matter the question, he will take the time to make sure it is answered and understood. If you email him or take the time to go to office hours, he will do the absolute most he can to help you. I seriously believe that if you take the time to get help, there is no way that you won't end up with the grade you want in his class. Also, you WILL understand math more from being taught by this guy, which was very very helpful for me, personally. 11/10 would recommend taking a math class with Dmitriy, ESPECIALLY if you are not a math person, and are just looking to get a requirement out of the way. If I had time next semester, math1220 with him would be my top choice, even though it's a 9:30, which I would normally try to avoid because I'm not a morning person.
