MATH 1220

This class is clearly a weeder course, but Brianna makes it enjoyable (or at least as enjoyable as Calc II can be)! She actively tries to get to know her students well and goes out of her way to help them out. Also, she's consistently brimming with verve! Without her, I honestly couldn't get through this class. In all, I highly recommend you take this course with Brianna. Out of all the professors that are currently teaching this course, she is definitely the best!

Professor Kurtz was literally the only thing that made an 8 am calc 2 class bearable. The course itself was much harder than calc 1 at UVA in my opinion but she was an excellent professor and if you go to office hours she is very helpful and willing to explain confusing concepts. I don't know how she had so much energy at 8am but it helped keep everyone from drifting off.

I absolutely detested 1210 last semester, but Prof Kurtz made this class sooo much more enjoyable! Lectures were very engaging, and coming to class significantly helped with understanding the material. Prof Kurtz made an effort to get to know all of her students and was always very energetic and funny!! Homework was a massive pain in my ass, though-- I ended up doing fine on the first two exams, but I literally could never do the homework & it took so long. I'm writing this before the final, so I can't speak to that, but I'm fairly certain there is a curve (which my grade probably will need). If you have to take this class, it will be hard, but this is def the prof to have.

Ok so I actually took this class over the summer during session 3 of 2023 and it was fully online. It being online definitely made exams easier, but regardless of that I am writing this review to let everyone know that if you are going to take calc 2 for whatever reason, take it with Professor Kurtz. Calc 2 is a notoriously annoying GPA killer at UVA, however Professor Kurts makes it as bearable and interesting as is humanly possible and genuinely wants to see her students succeed. This is something that I was not expecting going into a class with MATH 1220's reputation, and I am incredibly glad that my expectations were subverted. With my class being online, anything I say regarding the workload and exam structure probably won't be applicable to most, but I should mention that she curves your class grade after the class is finished. TLDR: Brianna Kurtz is the goat and if you need this credit, I would say it is worth switching around your schedule to ensure that you can take this class with her.

Brianna is an amazing professor and does everything she can do include everyone in the class to deliver the best experience. She accommodates students' needs and understands that expanding your understanding of calculus for the first time is hard. If needed, she gladly takes the time to explain concepts again and works to meet in the middle to really grasp relevant topics. Only 4/5 enjoyability because calc is calc hah

If you have to take calc 2, you really have to take it with Professor Kurtz. She may just be the best math teacher I've ever had. She has unbelievable energy and is open to any questions about math or your grades. The way she teaches is also just very helpful in learning the material somehow. Please take Professor Kurtz's course if you have the option.
