I was required to take Math 1210 because I am planning to declare my major as bio during my second year. Anyone who is required to take MATH 1210, I suggest that you do not take it with Ian. Ian is very knowledgeable about the material; however, he lacks interpersonal skills. He does not engage with his students. Also, he comes into class very dull. On the other hand, I had to watch youtube videos to really understand the material that was taught or go to a math tutor in Gilmer Hall because the way he teaches the material was confusing to me. Sometimes, he does not even write how he got certain steps on the board, which I felt was not helpful at all. I guess he expected us to know it. For his quizzes, it was difficult to know what material I should really study for because he does not specify. He would merely say "you will be quizzed on the material that I covered last week and this week." It turns out that is false because there are only specific sections that he covers on the quiz. By the way, his quizzes are usually only four questions. Another thing I would like to point out is how he rarely responds back to his emails, which my classmates have told me this whenever they had a question on the material taught. I highly suggest that you take this class with a different professor.
Definitely don't take this class if you don't need it. If you do need it (a lot of people do), it's bearable and you'll get through it but it's super important to do all of the homework and attend class. The majority of the TAs suck so your grade is pretty dependent on how much work you put into the class. It's not necessarily a difficult class, but it's definitely a pain in the ass. If you took calc in high school it shouldn't be too bad, but that's not to say it will be easy. I managed to get a B, so if you study and do your homework you should be fine, but it's gonna suck either way.
