Go to class. Gates is a great person, but he's a math major first. If you aren't familiar with Calculus, than you will have to work hard, especially on the written homework. Also, if you don't understand something, go to office hours. Passing won't be hard, but if your goal is to get an A, you're going to have to work for it.
He knows the subject very well but has trouble teaching the students so they understand it easily. Attending office hours definitely recommended - he is more than welcome to help. All in all, he is ok as a teacher but you might need to teach yourself some concepts if you don't understand them or go to office hours.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH Z. GATES IF YOU DO NOT HAVE PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH CALCULUS. He's a pretty nice guy, somewhat awkward and shy but approachable. 1. He's a student so he does not have the skills to teach, he's just a really smart kid. 2. He "taught" the class as if we already knew the material. 3. The test were impossible compared to the online homework, the written homework is a better reflection of exams. 4. THE FINAL IS IMPOSSIBLE.
If you want to do well pick another teacher!!
Zach moves pretty quickly, but he's a really great guy. If you haven't taken calc and don't want to go to office hours, you won't do well. That being said, he is absolutely willing to help and meet you on your schedule outside of office hours. He is awkward at first, but once he warms up he's pretty funny. I took AP Calc in high school and got a 3 on the exam and have done very well in this class. We don't have weekly quizzes like some other Applied 1 classes. If you find yourself getting bored with a slow pace, take Zach.
