He explains problems well in class, but gives a lot more homework than other sections! The written homework is always very tricky and due every week, and then we also have online problems due every week. This class takes up all my time! On the plus side, there are no quizzes. He is also usually helpful for the written homework during office hours if you're very confused so its alright in the end. And he doen't have an accent so that's good.
Do not take this class with Stephen Hardy. Just don't do it. He may explain things well at times, but he is simply not a good teacher. He makes absolutely no eye contact with the class and talks in a flat tone. He doesn't ever stop to see if anyone has any questions and actually would get irritated sometimes if someone dared to have a question, because why would you be so rude to interrupt his teaching? Homework took up so much time. Like the other reviewer mentioned, they were always overly tricky, and for no good reasons because though I did find the exams difficult, I found the homework even MORE so. I didn't do well in this class because it ate up all my time and I had to focus on my other classes as well. It is possible to do well in Applied Calc I with Stephen Hardy if you are good at math, enjoy math, or have other classes on your plate which are easy so you can devote all your waking hours to this. It is also possible to do well in Applied Calc I if you simply don't take it with Stephen Hardy.
This course is not that bad. If you've already learned calculus in high school, you won't need to read the book at all. And if you're new to calculus, he teaches you everything you'll be tested on and he teaches reasonably well. Sure Hardy is a little impersonal and can sometimes over-complicate basic concepts, but you only need to show up to take notes. Online homework is easy, written homework is excessively challenging- though it definitely makes the tests seem easy. (If you get stuck on the written homework, you can just go to his office hours and he'll basically tell you the answers) The tests themselves are fair, though you can lose a lot of points on small errors. The class has a decent curve, so it is not that difficult to do reasonably well with minimal effort. From what I have heard of the other teachers for this course, Stephen Hardy is a solid choice.
