MATH 1210

Whatever you do run for the HILLS before you take this class. UVA has grad students teach the course. We are supposed to "learn" the material on WebAssign during our homework before, but the web assign did not teach anything and I was so confused always.

Yangxiao (Howard) is the sweetest teacher. However, he is simply a grad student like all the rest of the "professors" with no experience teaching. This makes it EXTREMELY difficult to learn anything in class, so much to the point where I just stopped attending because it actually made me more confused.

Webassign homework is nice because you can try until you get 100. That's the only good thing about the class. Seriously this class was the bane of my existence and my friends'. The quizzes were pretty horrid - we all got 60s on the first one. They do curve though, so a 78 became an A-. The exams- DO NOT GET ME STARTED. They are unreal and unfair. The curve is literally 55 becomes a C because they are so bad. And it's so frustrating because we get worksheets on the topic we are learning every class, yet we would start them at 10 am, have to do them alone in our group before learning the content, and then Howard would start checking the worksheet literally at 10:48 am when the class ends at 10:50. it is seriously so unorganized and caused me distress. I would not recommend taking this class at UVA unless you need calc. If you need a math requirement, take something else. Everyone hates Math 1210.

Throughout my life I have been misled by this ridiculous notion that the derivative of people like you and me is zero, because people are constant and they can never change. But Howard (Yangxiao) proved this wrong because he changed and transformed me for the better. Best calc 1 class ever he's such a standup guy #howardgang4life

I took this Fall 2023. Math is not my favorite subject nor am I good at it. If you're debating between MATH 1310 and 1210, this one doesn't cover any geometry so it is significantly easier. Howard is a really nice guy. He just mainly goes through each worksheet during class. I went to his office hours once but didn't find it as helpful as the MCLC in Clemons Library. #tCFF23
