The structure of this course fit with my learning style. In class, we worked through a worksheet problem-by-problem, practicing many types of problems. Our TA would then work through the problem on the board and explain how he solved it. Students could interrupt at any time and ask questions. In this way, the basis of this course was hands-on learning. Short online assignments due before each class were very helpful in warming me up to the material before we learned about it. It forced me to practice what I had learned frequently, which promotes learning. In the same way, longer homework assignments due weekly were helpful opportunities to synthesize all that we had learned throughout the week and work through problems we might see on the exam. A few quizzes were given periodically throughout the semester to gauge our understanding. In addition, we had two midterms and a final. Exams were on paper, were a fair difficulty, and well put-together. Overall, the structure of this course was done very well. Our grade was calculated in the following manner:
WebAssign homework (short assignments and longer ones): 10%
Quizzes: 5%
Written HW (uploaded online a few times throughout the year): 5%
Classwork: 5%
Midterm Exam 1: 22.5%
Midterm Exam 2: 22.5%
Final Examination: 30%
I enjoyed this course. I think it was structured in a way that promoted efficient and effective learning of the material. Our TA, Yaolong Shen, was kind, knowledgeable, engaging, and helpful. All students had the ability to ask questions for him to answer. He explained problems very well, and wanted to make sure all students understood the material.
