I took this class in Spring 2024 (there was no option for that when writing it). Please DO NOT take this class with Sarah Herbert if possible. She is a great teacher, but grading is extremely harsh and you will likely study very hard and barely be able to get a B on most tests. The workload is not terrible, but the grading punishes you for the smallest mistake. When I took the class, the other section had a significantly higher average than ours. Almost everyone in the class had a B or lower.
This course is divided into two halves: Caesar (which is long, drawn-out paragraphs) and Ovid (which is short poems). The first half of the course I was failing, and the second half I was earning A's. It all depends on the passages, and how your brain is wired. Sarah is very passionate about the subject, and is engaging. She answers questions very thoroughly and is extremely approachable. However, she is a harsh grader. She gives very little partial credit, which can be unforgiving on tests and quizzes. She also tends to assign seemingly random point values to weekly homeworks, some 100 points and some not counting at all--so make sure to know those solidly. This is not a GPA-boosting class, but if you want to learn a lot, Sarah is a great professor to have.
